Job Description

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards.

This role involves performing diagnostic Nuclear Medicine imaging procedures through the administration of radioactive isotopes to generate imaging information necessary for diagnosis and treatment. Services are provided according to industry standards, IEMA Standards, department protocols, and hospital policies. The technologist also performs therapeutic Nuclear Medicine procedures.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assess and evaluate physician's orders for Nuclear Medicine examinations according to departmental protocol.
  2. Evaluate procedure requests and assess patients to determine appropriate protocols and methods.
  3. Inform patients about radioactive isotope safety and radiation safety matters.
  4. Educate patients about the examination to reduce anxiety and improve comfort and tolerance.
  5. Position patients and perform diagnostic imaging using Nuclear Medicine gamma cameras, caring for patients throughout the procedure following standards of nursing care and 'Patients First' guidelines.
  6. Assist in lifting and transporting patients to and from imaging devices.
  7. Act as a physician assistant during sterile procedures such as aspirations, drainages, and biopsies related to Nuclear Medicine.
  8. Notify physicians of any changes in patient condition or imaging characteristics.
  9. Maintain accurate medical records, including films and related paperwork.

Additional Functions

  1. Perform 'on-call' emergency procedures as needed.
  2. Perform miscellaneous duties assigned by supervisory staff.
  3. Conduct quality control testing and ensure quality assurance for imaging equipment, reporting any irregularities or failures promptly.
  4. Maintain the examination room according to department standards.
  5. Assist in the education of medical staff, students, and ancillary personnel regarding Nuclear Medicine.
  6. Coordinate scheduling and transportation of patients.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree from an accredited Nuclear Medicine Training Program.
  • Continuing education credits to maintain licensure and accreditation.
  • ARRT or NMTCB certification.
  • IEMA-Division of Nuclear Safety licensing and accreditation.
  • Graduation from an accredited Nuclear Medicine program with competencies in caring for patients across all age groups.
  • Ability to manage patient safety effectively during procedures, considering cognitive, psychomotor, emotional, and sensory capacities.
  • Experience managing patients aged 0-90.

Preferred:

  • Approximately 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of Siemens e.soft work environment.
