Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA seeks a highly skilled Non destructive Test Inspector to support the NDT Production Support Branch, Nondestructive Test and Nonnuclear Inspection Division, Code 1352 Quality Assurance Office.

You will perform radiographic, eddy current, and hull surveillance inspections, ensuring materials and fabrication meet contract requirements while guiding lower graded workers.

Qualifications

Summary

You will serve as a NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST INSPECTOR in the NDT Production Support Branch, Nondestructive Test and Nonnuclear Inspection Division, Code 1352 Quality Assurance Office, of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

You will serve as a NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST INSPECTOR in the NDT Production Support Branch, Nondestructive Test and Nonnuclear Inspection Division, Code 1352 Quality Assurance Office, of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties
  • You will independently exercise significantly more judgement and independence in determining the methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex calibration and certification problems.
  • You will keep abreast the technological changes in the occupation and provide technical guidance and assistance to lower graded workers.
  • You will make a wide range of critical decisions on matters concerning the acceptance or rejection of work performed by highly skilled craftsmen and other inspectors, independent of and without consultation with a supervisor.
  • You will be responsible for assuring materials, processes and fabrication techniques meet specification and contractual requirements.
  • You will conduct radiographic operations and/or serve as Radiographer-in-Charge (RIC) for nuclear and non-nuclear radiographic inspections.
  • You will perform eddy current inspections to inspect main, auxiliary, and air ejector tubing on nuclear and nonnuclear vessels.
  • You will conduct hull surveillance inspections.
  • You will ensure materials, processes, and fabrication techniques meet specification and contractual requirements.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to lift and/or carry loads/items up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
Qualifications

  • Utilizing a wide array of highly sophisticated quality control inspection/NDT techniques as well as utilizing many unique and specially designed precision instruments and gauges.
  • Performing complex nondestructive testing and analysis on mechanical components, piping systems and structural assemblies.
  • Acquiring and recording test results and data using enhanced signal processing and acquisition software on computer-based platforms.
  • Setting up and reading an oscilloscope to be able to understand ultrasonic testing on work being performed.
  • reading and interpreting complicated written technical material as instructions, TGI's, specifications, procedures, sketches and blueprints. Performing calibration and safety checks of test equipment prior to and after performance of nondestructive inspections.
