United States Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk Naval Shipyard is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic Leader in the Production Resources Department to oversee maintenance operations and lead a small team of skilled workers. You will ensure crew members have plans, tools, and instructions to perform their duties safely and effectively.

  • Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints; utilize shop mathematics to plan, compute, and layout projects.
  • Ability to perform the full range of tasks including being skilled in the use of tools and equipment common to the trade and be skilled in safety precautions.

  • Provide on-the-job training for up to 10 workers under your leadership, correct improper work methods, and ensure procedures are followed.

Job description

You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER in the Production Resources Department (900), Production Resources Manager (901), Service Shop (990) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Major Duties
  • You will ensure journey-men have the necessary plans, procedures, blueprints, instructions, tools, etc. to perform their work operations.
  • You will coordinate work while assuring proper intertrade and inter-shop coordination, high levels of quality assurance with timely yet orderly job completion.
  • You will maintain close observations of all work operations; assure proper adherence to procedures and guidelines, as well as keeping the first line supervisor informed of problems associated with these items.
  • You will take appropriate action to prevent and/or overcome bottlenecks, equipment and power breakdowns, assure that proper types and amounts of equipment are at the job site.
  • You will maintain computer records of expended man hours, and closing out jobs when completed.
  • You will provide on the job training for up to 10 workers under your leadership, correct improper work methods, and ensure assigned work procedures are being followed.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to lift/carry up to 50lbs.
  • You will be required to work in confined spaces.
  • You will be required to operate a truck, tractor, and/or vehicle.
  • You will be required to distinguish between colors and shades of colors.
  • You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.
Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

  • I have the ability to perform the full range of tasks including being skilled in the use of tools and equipment common to the trade and be skilled in the safety precautions, principals, and work methods associated with a maintenance mechanic; utilizing tools and equipment common to the trade.
  • I have the ability to perform common tasks including utilizing knowledge of the physical exterior and interior configurations of a large variety of submarines and surface ships; maintaining tools and equipment of the trade.
