Job summary

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is seeking substitutes to cover classrooms, supervise students, implement lesson plans, and provide continuity for learning across content areas.

Substitutes may work short-term or long-term assignments, reporting daily to a single location. Long-term substitutes may plan lessons, develop and grade assessments, and communicate with parents and administrators. Strong English communication and classroom management are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience as a lead teacher/instructor or in roles with classroom or youth instruction preferred.
• Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies.
• Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

• Adheres to LCPS curriculum and provided lesson plans.
• Observe, follow LCPS policies and expectations.
• Supervise students and ensure safety and learning continuity.
• Teach across content areas and classrooms as needed.
• Provide feedback to the absent employee with summaries after assignments.
• Site-based substitutes report daily to a single location.
• Long-term substitutes may plan lessons, develop and grade assessments, deliver instruction, and communicate with parents/administrators.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Overview

Substitutes assume the responsibility for all aspects of the classroom, including student supervision, implementing employee-created lesson plans, and providing continuity for learning in the classroom.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

• Adheres to and administers curriculum provided by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) or provided lesson plans created by the absent employee.
• Observe, follow, and understand LCPS policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Provides direction and supervision to students at all times, ensuring their safety and educational goals are a priority during the assignment.
• Be flexible to teach various subjects at different grade levels and remain confident, comfortable, and professional while providing the appropriate level of classroom management in order to meet the varying needs of the students and school staff.
• Works and builds positive relationships with students, staff, administrators, and community to create a positive student environment.
• Provide feedback to the absent employee at the conclusion of each assignment with a summary that includes lessons covered, incidents that may have occurred, student questions, etc.
• Site-based substitutes are assigned to a single location and are expected to report daily. They are utilized by school staff to fill open short-term substitute assignments. They implement employee-created lessons and instruct students across content areas and classrooms.
• Long-term substitute teachers are utilized when substitute assignments for licensed teaching positions exceed 10 consecutive days. The responsibilities of the long-term substitute may include lesson planning, developing and grading assessments, delivering instruction, and communicating and conferencing with parents, staff, and administrators.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education

• Minimum requirements are that a substitute shall be at least 18 years of age AND hold a high school diploma OR have passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the VDOE Board of Education.

Experience

• Experience with being a lead teacher/instructor/professor of adults or children preferred.
• Experience teaching or training adults or children in a non-classroom public school environment is preferred (i.e. scout leader, classroom/school volunteer, preschool instructor, coach, store or restaurant manager, trainer).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies is preferred.
• Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Substitute Compensation

• Daily Substitute Rate - $19.29 an hour or $135.03 a day for a 7-hour day
• Daily Loyalty Substitute Rate (25+ assignments) - $21.43 an hour or $150.01 a day for a 7-hour day
• Site-Based Substitute Rate - $22.00 an hour for $154.00 a day for a 7-hour day
• Long-Term Substitute Rate - $28.57 an hour or $200.00 a day for a 7-hour day
