Job summary

Loudoun County Public Schools is seeking a Substitute Nurse to support the health clinic operations across schools in Ashburn, VA. The substitute nurse will administer medications, perform health screenings, and assist with daily health office tasks as needed.

The role requires Virginia RN or LPN licensure and BLS CPR/AED certification, with duties including documentation, communication with families, and collaboration with LCPS staff. This is a part-time position with at-will employment terms.

Qualifications

  • Current Virginia or Compact license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Current BLS CPR/AED.
  • Prior health care-related experience will be evaluated to determine applicable substitute placement.

Responsibilities

  • Renders limited first aid; checks temperatures; contacts parents and school personnel as necessary regarding medical issues.
  • Administers routine prescription and non-prescription medicines, as well as emergency medication to prevent anaphylaxis, per policy and documents in the computer.
  • Manages daily care of students with chronic medical concerns according to health care plans.
  • Documents student clinic visits and care daily on the computer; initiates and completes injury/incident reports as required.
  • Maintains an organized clinic with necessary items to provide routine first aid and respond to emergencies.
  • May perform state-mandated screenings and prepare reports.
  • Provides direct nursing service for routine and emergency situations and maintains medical records.
  • Confers with and advises school administrators regarding student health issues and special education needs.
  • Collaborates with parents, medical providers, and LCPS staff to manage health issues safely at school.

Job Overview

In accordance with Virginia School Health Guidelines, Student Health Services provides care to ill and injured students, administers medication, performs vision and hearing screenings, trains school personnel to safely care for students with medical concerns, and reviews physicals and immunizations for school entrance. Health Office personnel manage the day-to-day care of students with health concerns, maintain information about the health and medical needs of all students, communicate with parents and staff, and encourage good hygiene practices for students and staff. Substitute Nurses serve to support the health clinic office or school nurse.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Renders limited first aid; checks temperatures; contacts parents and school personnel as necessary regarding medical issues.
  • Administers routine prescription and non-prescription medicines, as well as emergency medication to prevent anaphylaxis, per the school district’s medication policy and documents appropriately in the computer.
  • Manages daily care of students with chronic medical concerns according to the individualized health care plans.
  • Documents student clinic visits and care provided daily on the computer; initiates and completes injury/incident reports as required.
  • Maintains an organized clinic with necessary items to provide routine first aid and respond to emergencies.
  • May perform state-mandated screenings and prepare reports.
  • Provides direct nursing service for routine and emergency situations and prepares and maintains medical records.
  • Applies considerable judgment and interpretation in unusual or nonstandard situations.
  • Confers with and advises school administrators regarding student health issues, including student medical concerns, parent medical concerns, health emergency procedures, and special education needs.
  • Collaborates with parents, medical providers, and LCPS staff to manage health issues safely and appropriately at school.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education/Certification

  • Current Virginia or Compact license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Current BLS CPR/AED

Experience

  • Prior health care-related experience will be evaluated to determine applicable substitute placement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and practice of standard first aid and basic health practices.
  • Knowledge of basic computer and data entry skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with students requiring health assistance; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to work cooperatively with others.Knowledge of nursing and health care practices as applied to children and youth.
  • Ability to provide effective nursing and related health services for students, to keep abreast of medical practices in the field, to deal effectively with students requiring health assistance, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.

Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Organizational Relationship

The health offices of High School, Middle School, and Title 1 Elementary Schools are each staffed by a full-time RN.

Terms of Employment

Substitutes are employed on an at-will basis and are not considered contractual employees

Substitute Compensation:

  • The pay rate is dependent upon the substitute assignment.
