Job summary

Grand Valley State University is seeking an Overnight Safety Specialist to manage evening and overnight security operations across residence halls. You will supervise a team of Overnight Safety Student Assistants, monitor entrances, enforce access protocols, and assist residents and guests.

The role requires rotating evening/overnight shifts and coordination with Housing & Residence Life, campus security, and university partners.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Experience supervising, mentoring, coordinating, or providing leadership to employees or student staff.
• Ability to respond to challenging interpersonal, behavioral, safety, or customer-service situations.
• Ability and willingness to maintain a regular evening/overnight work schedule.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional oversight of nighttime access and security operations across residential buildings.
• Conduct regular rounds to supervise Overnight Safety Student Assistants and assess operations.
• Ensure staff follow established procedures for residents, guests, and unauthorized individuals.
• Respond to situations beyond staff authority and escalate to Housing & Residence Life or campus security as needed.
• Recruit, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate Overnight Safety Student Assistants.
• Develop and maintain staffing schedules for overnight hours and manage call-offs or vacancies.
• Serve as the point of contact for Overnight Safety staff and coordinate with campus partners.
• Document significant access issues, guest concerns, and safety incidents.
• Collaborate with Housing & Residence Life and police for follow-up on resident issues.
• Develop overnight safety operating procedures, training materials, and escalation steps.
• Assess deployment of staff based on building population and risk, and foster relationships with campus partners.
• Participate in safety planning, emergency preparedness, and related meetings.
