Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is hiring a Patient Care Technician II for the night shift. Under licensed supervision, you will support RNs, monitor high‑risk patients, and perform tasks from vital signs to basic procedures. The role emphasizes safety, communication, and teamwork on a 32‑hour weekly schedule.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and a current BLS certification (or within 30 days of hire). A signing bonus may be available after interview eligibility is confirmed.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a high school education or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• BLS certification within 30 days as a condition of employment.
• Demonstrated competency in Patient Care Technician I level with 800 hours and 6 months as PCA I.
• Prior inpatient/outpatient care experience or clinical care training.
• Ability to read, write and communicate in English clearly.

Responsibilities

• Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations.
• Maintains constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned.
• Assists in creating a safe environment and de‑escalation when needed.
• Assists patients with daily living activities such as hygiene and meals.
• Helps move, lift, and position patients using proper body mechanics.
• Performs patient safety checks and follows restraints policy when needed.
• Takes and records vital signs and measures height/weight.
• Performs EKGs, POC tests, and bladder scanning per standards.
• Phlebotomy in certain locations; prepares specimens for lab.
• Assists with treatments by preparing equipment and supplies.
• Monitors intake and tube feeding; records outputs.
• Communicates respectfully and builds rapport with patients and staff.
• Replenishes unit supplies and seeks help when needed.
• Precepts new Patient Care Technicians; stays current with changes.
• Complies with policies and maintains attendance.
