Job summary

MU Health Care is seeking a compassionate, organized professional for the Emergency Services Patient Access team. This on-site role supports patients and families during shift hours of 9:30 PM–7:30 AM, Monday through Thursday, with a focus on accurate insurance verification and smooth registration processes.

The department emphasizes teamwork, empathy, and adherence to regulatory requirements, ensuring high-quality patient experiences and safety across the capital region medical center.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Six (6) months of experience with frontline customer service and guest relations duties and skills.

Responsibilities

• Verify eligibility for insurance benefits with payor/insurance company on a timely basis.
• Submit Emergency Department Notice of Admissions critical in securing payment for the encounter.
• Process high volume of acutely ill patients in poor condition with constant patient turnover.
• Accurately identify patients in highly acute conditions to protect patient safety and prevent medical record duplicates.
• Execute disaster preparedness protocols for high volume unidentified patients in emergency mass influx events.
• Keep abreast of regulatory requirements specific to the Emergency Room department and inpatients.
• Assess transfer eligibility and prevent duplicate encounters by understanding levels of care.
• Screen uninsured patients' eligibility for Medicaid expansion.
• Prioritize multiple tasks and coordinate with EMS during trauma arrivals; collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams.
• Perform bedside registration ensuring verification of insurance benefits for each patient.
• Communicate with families during emotional events and liaise between clinical staff and families.
• Resolve technical issues impacting patient care and make decisions to ensure proper care is delivered.
• Adapt to unpredictable environments and deescalate agitated patients with empathy.
• Report to work on time for all scheduled shifts.
• May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.
