Job summary

MercyOne Davenport is seeking a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments by collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting tests essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. The role requires accurate specimen handling, proper labeling, and adherence to quality and safety standards.

The position involves venipunctures and specimen processing, with a schedule of 2130-0600, every other weekend, on call and some holidays.

Qualifications

Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems quickly.
Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

Responsibilities

Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age and ensures proper specimen collection.
Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add-on orders and pending lists.
Identifies patients and specimens using two unique identifiers and labels containers correctly.
Registers and logs specimens in LIS, evaluates adequacy, and scans documentation into the patient record.
Performs specimen processing and documentation per laboratory protocols.
Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
Follows safety, infection control, and chemical‑handling procedures; supports efficient workflows.
Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
Restocks supplies and participates in department projects.
