Job summary

MercyOne Health System is seeking a Lab Assistant for the night shift to support various laboratory departments, aiding collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of tests for patient care. Position involves 2130-0600 schedule, every other weekend, on call, and some holidays.

Responsibilities include venipuncture, specimen handling, LIS entry, and ensuring data integrity. The role requires laboratory experience, familiarity with medical terminology, and strong computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age and ensures proper specimen collection according to laboratory policy.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add-ons and pending lists per procedures.
• Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels containers correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS, evaluates adequacy, and scans documentation into the patient record.
• Performs specimen processing and documentation in accordance with lab protocols.
• Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures to support quality and safe operations.
• Operates laboratory information systems to support data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to general lab operations by restocking supplies and participating in department projects.
