Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, is hiring a Lab Assistant. You will support laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of tests essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. Accuracy and timely turnaround are critical.

Responsibilities include venipunctures and specimen labeling, LIS data entry, and assisting in general lab operations. A high school diploma or GED is required.

Qualifications

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
• Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age and follows collection policy.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions from internal and external customers and manages add‑on orders.
• Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels containers accurately.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS, evaluates adequacy, and scans documentation into the patient record.
• Performs specimen processing and documentation in accordance with laboratory protocols.
• Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with laboratory staff.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical handling procedures to ensure quality and safety.
• Operates laboratory information systems to support data entry and workflow.
• Contributes to general laboratory operations by restocking supplies and participating in committees.
