Job summary

UPMC Altoona is seeking a full-time Telephone Operator for the 3rd shift (9pm–7am on a 4x10 schedule; option for five 8-hour shifts 11pm–7am). The role involves serving as the main contact with the public and hospital departments in routine and emergency situations, including paging and information relay.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of experience in call handling or customer service.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• 1 year of experience answering and processing calls through automated phone system or customer service.

Responsibilities

• Train new operators when needed.
• May perform system data entry on request.
• Provide service to multiple answering service clients using prescribed protocols.
• Process emergency codes or STAT pages as required.
• Initiate voice paging when needed.
• Provide physician on-call information to callers.
• Use standard phrasing when answering calls.
• Provide dialing instructions to patients and handle multi-line calls with good service.
• Determine caller needs (extension, information) and transfer calls.
• Provide status reports on pages in progress to requesters.
• Read and interpret procedure manuals (fire, disaster, etc.). Act 34 compliance.
