Job summary

AdventHealth in Daytona Beach, FL seeks a Surgical First Assistant to support the operating room team on a full-time day shift. You will prepare surgical suites, select and handle instruments and supplies, and aid in achieving hemostasis and safe patient care.

Responsibilities include assisting with patient positioning, maintaining aseptic technique, and coordinating with the surgeon and staff to ensure smooth procedures.

Qualifications

• Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards.
• Knowledge of instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized for surgical procedures.
• Understanding of the procedures being performed and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
• Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality.
• Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values.
• Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements.
• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals.
• Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Sets up operating suites and updates cards per surgeon preferences.
• Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies for procedures.
• Maintains aseptic technique and monitors team for breaks in technique.
• Assists with positioning patients and safety.
• Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during procedures.
• Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts as needed.
• Participates in time-out verification and addresses discrepancies.
