Job summary

AdventHealth is seeking an experienced First Assistant to support the surgical team in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. The role encompasses preparing the operating room, positioning patients, assisting surgeons and anesthesia, and ensuring sterility and equipment readiness throughout procedures.

The candidate should have at least 2+ years of experience as a first assistant, BLS, and CSA/CSFA or equivalent certification, with strong communication and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Anatomy required.
• Assist the surgeon in surgical procedures.
• Prepares and maintains surgical area.
• Performs technical responsibilities for optimal patient care.
• Serves as a resource person to the team.
• Able to precept and act as resource person and preceptor in multiple surgical specialties.
• Prepare surgical suites with instruments, resources, and supplies as per surgeon cards.
• Strong physician/surgeon relationship and team mentality.
• Respect patient rights and cultural values.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.
• Read, write and speak conversational English.
• Basic computer skills and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Positions patients for optimal surgical exposure while ensuring comfort and safety.
• Pads pressure points and guards against nerve damage to prevent injury.
• Collaborates with anesthesia to maintain patient temperature.
• Uses surgical equipment like tables, stabilizers, and C-arm extensions.
• Evaluates patients post-procedure for positioning-related injuries.
• Assists with exposure and visualization of the operative site.
• Assists with hemostasis and transfusion techniques.
• Participates in volume replacement or auto-transfusion as needed.
• Assists with closure of body planes using suturing techniques.
• Applies dressings and secures drainage systems.
• Maintains and prepares the surgical area and instruments.
• Performs scrub, prep, catheterization, and other patient care tasks.
