Job summary

Vassar College is seeking a Sergeant/Supervisor to direct daily operations on an assigned shift, supervise officers, and manage emergencies. The role requires strong communication, decision-making, and training duties to ensure safety across campus.

Responsibilities include shift assignments, briefings, timekeeping, and coordinating with police, fire, EMS, or college services. Overtime and variable hours are required, with a one-year probation and background check.

Qualifications

• Possess a New York State Driver License for at least 2 years.
• Possess a NYS Security Guard license or 8-hour pre-assignment cert with ability to attain license within 30 days.
• 30 college credits or formal supervisory training.
• Knowledge of NYS Penal Law; familiarity with federal/state campus laws.
• Strong service orientation; ability to work in a diverse environment.
• Computer skills to prepare reports and use department software.
• Ability to communicate in English; calm and de-escalate in emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Assign officers' shift posts and patrols.
• Conduct shift briefings and assign special details.
• Fill vacant shifts as needed and manage time/leave in payroll systems.
• Coordinate responses to emergencies with police/fire/EMS/college services.
• Monitor records system; oversee training and performance feedback.
• Prepare emergency notifications and inform senior Campus Safety personnel.
• Oversee field training and assist with campus events and security programs.
