Job summary

Vassar College is seeking a part-time Security Officer for overnight shifts (11pm–7am) as part of the Campus Safety team. The role involves patrols, responding to calls, reporting, and supporting campus events with strong communication and de-escalation skills.

The position is unionized (SPFPA) and requires a NYS driver license, a security guard license or 8-hour pre-assignment training, and a high school diploma or GED. Background checks and probation apply.

Qualifications

• Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
• Ability to de-escalate charged situations and respond to emergencies.
• Critical decision-making skills and the ability to follow procedures.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including overnight hours.

Responsibilities

• Attend shift briefings and training mandated by college and department.
• Respond to all calls for service promptly and maintain reports.
• Patrol campus on foot/vehicle, monitor security hazards, and assist with events.
• Write comprehensive reports and utilize department software for records.
• Participate in officer field training and train new hires as assigned.
• Carry out other duties deemed necessary by supervisors.
