Job summary

Vassar College is seeking a Sergeant/Supervisor for the Campus Safety department to direct day-to-day operations on their assigned overnight shift (11pm-7am) and to supervise officers. The role requires de-escalation, emergency response, training, and coordination with campus services. Overtime and weekend work are expected; probationary period applies.

The position emphasizes leadership, policy compliance, and effective communication to support campus safety and the college mission.

Qualifications

• Possess and maintain a New York State Driver License for at least 2 years.
• Possess a valid NYS Security Guard license or an 8-hour pre assignment training certificate with the ability to attain license within 30 days.
• 30 college credits or formal supervisory training at a recognized agency or institution.
• Working knowledge of the NYS Penal Law and general familiarity with/ability to learn relevant laws.
• A strong service orientation and ability to work in a diverse multicultural community.
• Sufficient computer experience to prepare reports and use department software.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, written and verbal.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations and de-escalate charged situations.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more and move 75 lbs. or more.
• Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
• Ability to work overtime and outdoors; CPR/AED and Narcan certification required or attainable.
• Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assigns Officers shift posts/patrols.
• Conducts shift briefings.
• Informs and assigns officers to special details on shift.
• Fills vacant shifts as needed.
• Manages time/leave in payroll and scheduling systems per guidelines.
• Coordinates response to calls or emergencies with police, fire, EMS, or campus services.
• Responds to emergency calls requiring supervisory action.
• Directs emergency notifications to the campus as appropriate.
• Monitors records management system for accuracy.
• Oversees field training on their shift.
• Trains officers in new procedures and equipment.
• Communicates policy updates and briefings to officers.
• Notifies senior Campus Safety personnel of important information.
