Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking a Clinical Nurse, RN – Per Diem Level III for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Washington, DC. This nights position offers a per diem role in a high-acuity NICU within a teaching hospital.

You will perform comprehensive neonatal assessments, manage complex respiratory support, and administer high-risk medications while engaging families and ensuring safe, evidence-based care.

Qualifications

• ADN is required; BSN preferred.
• Minimum three years of NICU bedside RN experience.
• Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia.
• BLS and NRP certifications required; neonatal certifications encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive neonatal assessments and develop individualized plans of care for critically ill neonates.
• Manage and titrate respiratory support including ventilation, HFOV, CPAP, HFNC; monitor status.
• Initiate and maintain vascular access (UVC, UAC, PICC) and monitor hemodynamics.
• Administer high-risk neonatal meds (vasopressors, inotropes, TPN, surfactant).
• Support thermoregulation and developmentally appropriate care (NIDCAP, positioning).
• Recognize neonatal emergencies and participate in drills/resuscitation.
• Provide family-centered care and educate parents about NICU equipment and infant cues.
• Document care and coordinate with nursing teams; delegate appropriately.
