Job summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is looking for full-time Next Step Advisers to support high school students across North Carolina through personalized advising on postsecondary pathways, including college, career, and military routes.

Advisers work with partner schools to develop plans, assist with applications for college, scholarships and financial aid, and help raise the college-going culture through presentations and events.

Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The offices within the Enrollment Division (Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Scholarships and Student Aid ( OSSA ), the Office of the University Registrar, and the Carolina College Advising Corps) focus on increasing the enrollment of outstanding students from North Carolina and beyond; meeting the full demonstrated financial need of all undergraduate students who qualify for federal aid; maintaining the integrity of the student record and academic and administrative processes; supporting student success; and providing great care to all who come our way. The work of the Enrollment Division is closely scrutinized by students and their families; by faculty, staff, students, and alumni; by secondary-school teachers and administrators; by lawmakers at the local, state, and national level; and by the media.

Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is looking for full-time Next Step Advisers for the Carolina College Advising Corps to support high school students across the state. The Carolina College Advising Corps aims to help low-income, first-generation students from North Carolina explore and pursue postsecondary pathways whether college, career, or military service through personalized, high-quality advising. By placing recent college graduates as advisers in selected public high schools throughout the state, the Corps equips students with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to create meaningful postsecondary plans and pursue their goals. By recruiting graduates who are connected to and committed to North Carolina, we create pathways for them to contribute to the University’s mission of enriching the lives of the people in our state.

Carolina College Advising Corps Next Step Advisers assist students with exploring a full range of postsecondary opportunities including career pathways, military service, and workforce development. The Advisers support student services departments at each of their partner schools to develop and implement a strategic plan to reach out to students and their parents, and to help them with college, scholarship, and financial aid applications. Advisers also work to increase the college-going culture at each of their schools by working one-on-one with students, conducting group presentations, and coordinating whole school events. They lead campus visits, career exploration activities, and planning sessions that prepare students for college, career, or military pathways.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the delivery of student advising and counseling or student personnel services, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Strong interpersonal, communication, organization, and analytical skills. Requires critical thinking, sound judgment, creativity, and a passion to help students overcome obstacles and realize their college-going potential. Strong writing, public speaking, and presentation skills. Ability to work with both students and adults in a professional and courteous manner.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Experience working with students is preferred.
