Job summary

Tailscale is seeking a skilled Software Engineer to join the Dataplane Engineering Team. You will contribute to core client connectivity features and collaborate across product management and engineering to deliver scalable network solutions.

Work in a fully remote, startup-like environment with asynchronous collaboration and strong emphasis on security. Key responsibilities include designing and testing client-side networking software, advancing features, and supporting customer environments.

Qualifications

• Significant experience with networking software and diagnosing networking issues.
• Deep understanding of routing, VPNs, IP management, and NAT traversal.
• Proficiency in Go or other low-level languages (C/C++, Rust) with concurrent programming.
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of low-level OS network stacks is highly desirable.
• Ability to give and process constructive feedback and work independently.
• Comfort working asynchronously in a startup environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and document core client-side networking software.
• Advance product features by integrating industry protocols with Tailscale designs.
• Apply security-centric architecture and coding practices for resilience.
• Evaluate and optimize performance, reliability, and scalability across platforms.
• Provide expert consultation to support customer network escalations.
• Engage with the open-source community and related projects.
