Job summary

Black Box is seeking a Technician - Network for their San Francisco location. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years in data communications, with skills in rack and stack activities, cabling, installation, and troubleshooting of network equipment including Cisco and Avaya phones.

This full-time position offers multiple shifts to provide 24/7 support, with a possibility of permanent hire after 6 months. Candidates must possess strong technical skills and be able to communicate effectively with clients.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in data communications.
  • Basic knowledge of Cisco Phones, switches, and routers.
  • Familiarity with IP phone installation and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Patching cabling between network equipment and customer’s network.
  • Installation, troubleshooting, and de-installing network equipment.
  • Provide hardware break-fix services for network infrastructure.

Skills

Technical tools proficiency (e.g., Sniffers, cable testers)
Communication skills

Black Box Network Services, the global leader in communication system integration, is looking for several Technician - Network with a proven track record in:

  • Racking and stacking of network devices
  • Cable patching
  • Physical layer troubleshooting
  • Installing and troubleshooting Cisco and Avaya IP phones
  • Equipment disposal activities
Position Details
  • Hourly salary based upon the level of experience & skill‑set
  • Full time permanent hire possibility after 6 months
  • Standard work hours: Multiple shifts to support 24/7 coverage
  • Client Addendum Applies; will provide at the time of offer acceptance
Responsibilities
  • The patching cabling between network equipment and customer’s network
  • The installation of power cables from equipment to power supply in rack/cabinet/closet
  • The installation, troubleshooting and de‑installing network equipment
  • Install/swap out devices (e.g., phone, computers, cables, boards, edge routers, switches and etc.)
  • Install, troubleshoot, and de‑install Network General remote Sniffers
  • Complete all hard and complex Move, Add Change (MAC) requests within the defined service levels
  • Act as interface between customer’s associates and management
  • Provide hardware break‑fix services for network infrastructure
  • Perform onsite call‑through, data, voice, website and security testing
  • Perform back‑up testing to ensure all systems are connected to the customer’s network as directed
  • Support carrier testing of circuits
  • Assist with facilities efforts
  • Power and uninterruptable power supply (UPS) restoral
  • Water problems
  • Emergency cooling restoration
  • Fire suppression exercises, restoration, and post fire events
  • Support inventory management activities
  • Receiving inventory
  • Tagging of assets
  • Tracking spares (crash kits)
  • Ordering inventory
  • Updating inventory records
  • Prepare and return damaged equipment
  • Act as an interface, as needed, between associates at the applicable location and centralized project / operations / MAC management
Requirements
  • Must be proficient in utilizing technical tools such as Sniffers, BERT testers, cable testers, and fiber testers.
  • Requires experience in working in communications closets
  • Must be able to perform rack and stack activities
  • Must be able to safely lift heavy objects
  • Must understand cable patching processes and procedures
  • Must be familiar with 66 Block and 110 Block cross connect procedures
  • Must have a basic knowledge of data communications networking.
  • Must be able to assist in troubleshooting issues
  • Must understand network terminology
  • Must be familiar with IP phone
  • Must be able to program Cisco phones
  • Must be able to install Avaya phones
  • Must be able to troubleshoot Avaya and Cisco phones
  • Requires good interpersonal communications skills
  • Must be able to explain technical issues in a way the customer will understand an issue
  • Must be able to interpret a customer’s issue in a way that will allow technician to facilitate a resolution
Experience and Education
  • 5 years of experience in data communications
  • Must have a basic knowledge of Cisco Phones, switches and routers
  • Must have a basic knowledge of local and wide area networking.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
