Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Network Engineer configures, deploys, tests, maintains, monitors and troubleshoots the enterprise network components to provide a secure, high performance network. Supports the stable operation of the in-house computer network (LAN/WAN infrastructure). This includes planning, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links while ensuring minimal network downtime. The person will also diagnose, resolve, and document hardware and software network problems for local, off-site and/or remote locations in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training and support where required. This position is a member of a 24/7/365 global department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Supports development and implementation of networking projects and new technology installations
2. Conducts research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts, evaluate and recommend for purchase networking hardware and software products
3. Writes technical specifications for purchase of networking hardware and software products
4. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of networking contracts and supervises contract-based installations
5. Installs, configures, tests, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots end user workstation hardware, software, networked peripheral devices, cabling, and networking hardware and software products
6. Maintains servers, including e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software
7. Maintains security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems
8. Maintains all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs
9. Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports
10. Receives and respond to incoming calls, pages, and/or e-mails regarding network connectivity problems
11. Performs on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network problems for a variety of end users, and recommends and implements corrective hardware and software solutions, including off-site repair
12. Recommends, schedules, and performs network improvements, upgrades, and repairs
13. Practices network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory
14. Prepares, maintains, and adheres to procedures for logging, reporting, and statistically monitoring network data
15. Liaise with, and provides training and support to help desk support staff on network issues
16. Performs system backups and recovery, and server and security audits
17. Provides guidance to junior members of the team as required
18. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Required working knowledge, basic skills, and the ability to understand and follow simple written or oral instructions
• Hands on experience with Cisco Enterprise networking solutions, VOIP environments, and an understanding of WAN technologies and Content networking
• Ability to help others in clarifying somewhat complex problems; adapts or modifies established approaches, identify and select appropriate tools, data, and analysis techniques to diagnose problems and develop solutions, balances competing short- and long-term goals within one's area in alignment with the larger area's direction and objectives

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

• Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
• Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
• Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelors degree and 5 years related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Intermediate certification in area of responsibility

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• CCNA, CCNP or CCVP certification

Salary

Hiring salary range is: $80,523 - $92,601

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions.
