Harrison Gray Search is partnering with a nationally recognized, fee-only, majority employee-owned RIA to identify a National Tax Leader to run the national tax practice inside its Accounting & Business Advisory business. The firm has been scaling the tax practice through both organic growth and acquisition, and it needs a seasoned practice leader who can set the standards, run the leadership bench, carry the practice P&L, and still hold a focused book of senior client relationships. This is a player-coach seat reporting directly to the Head of the Accounting & Business Advisory business.
Our client runs a fully integrated wealth model in which accounting, tax, financial planning, investment management, and estate planning sit under one roof and shape client decisions together. Tax is not a parallel service line that occasionally refers across to wealth. It is embedded in how the firm serves business owners, closely held companies, and high-net-worth families, and the National Tax Leader is the senior leader responsible for making that cross-serving real at scale.
The role is also one of the few in the national tax leadership market where the leader runs a true multi-region practice (four regions today: Heartland, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern) and still carries a focused senior book. For a practice leader who wants scope and leverage without stepping fully off the field, that balance is rare.
You will own the firm’s tax service methodology and standard operating procedures, driving one consistent way of delivering tax compliance, tax planning, and tax research and consulting across every region. You will set the pricing standards and rate floors for the national tax practice, and you will hold Regional Directors accountable for managing to them. You will own the tax quality-review framework and the standards that sit under it, setting the bar and holding the practice to it while deep technical execution flows through the Regional Directors and the firm’s technical resources.
You will directly lead the firm’s Regional Directors (four regions today) and run the regional tax practices through them, ensuring alignment with firm goals, culture, and vision. You will develop, mentor, and hold accountable both the Regional Director layer and the high-potential tax leaders behind them. You will oversee capacity planning, staffing, and key hiring across the national tax practice, and you will support succession planning and build the leadership bench beneath the RD layer.
You will carry and own the national tax practice P&L. Each Regional Director remains accountable for their regional P&L, and those roll up to you for the practice total. You will drive national tax practice performance against the firm’s core metrics (Net New Revenue, contribution margin, and unit value growth, with contribution margin and NNR as primary) and you will monitor supporting KPIs including realization, utilization, quality outcomes, and staff development.
You will maintain a focused book of senior, high-value client relationships at roughly one-third of capacity, weighted toward relationship leadership and business development rather than hands-on preparation. You will represent the tax practice with priority clients, advisors, and centers of influence, and you will support retention and address significant service risks personally when they arise.
You will enable and equip cross-serving between the tax practice and the Wealth Advisor community under the firm’s hub-and-spoke model, making it easy for advisors to identify and hand off tax opportunities. You will partner with growth leadership and the advisor community to build repeatable, packaged tax offerings that scale across offices. You will contribute to firm-wide strategy as a senior member of the Accounting & Business Advisory leadership team, translating strategic goals into national tax initiatives and driving execution. You will promote unified processes, standards, and culture across all tax offices, and you will support the firm’s technology and transformation agenda as it affects the tax practice (practice-management and tax-platform transitions in particular).
You are a seasoned tax practice leader who has run a multi-office tax or professional services practice with direct accountability for the P&L and the revenue number. You know how to set standards and enforce them across a distributed practice. You have led senior technical professionals and the leaders above them, and you are comfortable sitting in the Regional Director seat on tough weeks when the practice needs it.
You are also a credible, current senior practitioner. You can still carry a book of high-value client relationships and represent the firm at the most senior level with sophisticated clients and the advisors who refer them. You are looking for a seat where tax drives real client outcomes across an integrated wealth platform, not one where tax operates in a silo, and you want the influence, the leverage, and the scope that comes with running a national practice inside a well-capitalized firm.
