Job description

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Head of Tax to lead and strengthen a growing tax function within an established financial services organization. This individual will serve as the senior tax subject matter expert while taking ownership of the day-to-day operation of the practice, including technical quality, workflow, team leadership, client delivery, and continuous improvement.

This is not a strategy role. The broader direction for the tax offering is already established. We are looking for an execution-focused leader and “builder” who can take that direction and turn it into a highly organized, scalable, and consistently executed tax operation.

A key part of the mandate will be helping bring the tax function into greater alignment with the firm's broader suite of services. The right person will enjoy building structure, improving processes, developing people, solving problems, and creating a tax operation that works seamlessly alongside other client-facing teams.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants meaningful ownership and leadership responsibility while remaining close to the work. The Head of Tax should be comfortable rolling up their sleeves—reviewing returns, resolving technical questions, improving workflows, coaching the team, and stepping into preparation when necessary.

The practice is primarily focused on individual income tax returns, with additional small-business and related entity work. Most returns are intermediate in complexity, with a smaller number of more sophisticated matters.

Key Responsibilities
Lead & Build the Tax Function
  • Take ownership of the day-to-day operation and execution of the tax practice.
  • Bring greater structure, consistency, accountability, and scalability to the function.
  • Help further integrate tax services with the firm's broader client offering and create a more seamless experience across teams.
  • Establish effective workflows, operating procedures, documentation standards, and clear ownership throughout the tax process.
  • Identify operational gaps or bottlenecks and implement practical solutions.
  • Maintain visibility into workload, capacity, deadlines, open items, and client commitments.
  • Lead filing-season execution and ensure the team is organized, prepared, and appropriately resourced during peak periods.
Technical Tax Leadership & Quality Control
  • Serve as the senior tax subject matter expert for individual and small-business tax matters.
  • Review returns for technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance.
  • Remain hands‑on and prepare returns when needed to support the team, address capacity constraints, or resolve more complex matters.
  • Research and resolve federal and state tax questions and provide practical guidance to colleagues and clients.
  • Develop and maintain strong review and quality‑control processes.
  • Identify recurring errors or technical issues and translate them into better processes, training, and standards.
  • Lead, coach, and develop members of the tax team.
  • Establish clear expectations around quality, productivity, communication, deadlines, and accountability.
  • Assess technical capabilities and skill gaps and provide meaningful feedback, coaching, and development.
  • Delegate work appropriately based on complexity, experience, and capacity.
  • Create an environment where team members understand their responsibilities and have the tools and support needed to perform at a high level.
  • Address performance or execution issues proactively and constructively.
Client & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Serve as a senior resource for tax clients and handle complex or sensitive client conversations with confidence.
  • Take ownership of escalated client questions, notices, errors, or service issues and drive them toward resolution.
  • Partner closely with financial planning/advisory professionals and other client‑facing teams.
  • Provide the technical tax expertise and execution support necessary to successfully implement tax‑related recommendations for clients.
  • Help ensure that tax services feel integrated with the broader client relationship rather than operating as a standalone function.
  • Evaluate prospective tax engagements for fit, complexity, and service requirements and support effective onboarding of new clients.
Operational Improvement & Execution
  • Continuously identify opportunities to make the tax practice more efficient, organized, and scalable.
  • Translate established business priorities into actionable processes and measurable improvements.
  • Improve workflow, delegation, quality control, documentation, and resource utilization.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant federal and state tax‑law changes and ensure the team is prepared to apply them accurately.
  • Surface capacity, quality, client, or process risks early and take ownership of resolving them.
Qualifications
  • Significant progressive experience in tax preparation and review, with deep practical knowledge of individual income taxation.
  • Meaningful experience with small‑business and related entity returns.
  • Strong hands‑on experience operating within a tax practice and managing the demands of filing season.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workflow, deadlines, review processes, client communication, and competing priorities.
  • CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) strongly preferred, although candidates with comparable technical expertise and experience may be considered.
  • Leadership experience managing or guiding tax professionals. Extensive management tenure is not required; candidates with a few years of direct management or meaningful team‑lead experience may be compelling if paired with strong technical expertise and leadership ability.
  • Strong technical research, analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to independently resolve tax questions and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical matters clearly to clients and colleagues.
  • High level of ownership, follow‑through, attention to detail, and process discipline.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline preferred.
