Responsibilities

  • Greets patrons and communicates racing information in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Depresses terminal keys and issues wager tickets quickly and accurately.
  • Accepts money and makes appropriate change.
  • Accounts for all tickets and forwards to Mutuels Management for reconciliation.
  • Maintains accurate cash balance and completes end-of-day procedures.
  • Checks for counterfeit bills per procedures.
  • Verifies patron age to meet wagering requirements.
  • Participates in meetings, trainings and other company activities.
  • Seeks supervisor guidance when needed.
  • Answers questions about wagering rules and policies.

General Definition

Sells wagers on live and simulcast racing, handles large amounts of money with the ability to make change, cashes winning tickets, checks ID’s, and maintains an accurate cash balance. Explains wagering rules and company procedures in a friendly, ethical manner.

Essential Job Functions
  • Greets patrons and communicates racing information as requested in a friendly, professional manner, including race results, reading programs, wagering advice, issuance of vouchers for self-service machines and giving instruction on how to place a wager.
  • Quickly and accurately depresses corresponding numbered key of terminal in accordance with patron’s wager instructions and provides patron with ejected wager ticket in a timely manner.
  • Accepts money and makes appropriate change.
  • Accounts for all cashed or cancelled tickets and forwards to Mutuels Management and the Money Room for verification and reconciliation.
  • Handles large sums of cash and maintains an accurate cash balance, and follows departmental cash handling procedures daily. Responsible for completing end-of-day cash and balance procedures.
  • Checks for counterfeit bills in accordance with company procedure.
  • Checks patron identification to determine minimum age requirement for wagering is met.
  • Participates in meetings, training and other company-related activities as scheduled.
  • Seeks out the assistance of a supervisor/management to address questions and concerns.
  • Answers questions about wagering rules and policies when requested.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of facilities, as well as special events, in order to advise patrons of the same, whenever possible.
  • Assists other Mutuels tellers within the assigned area, as needed.
  • Held accountable, to a high degree, for the accuracy and thoroughness of departmental records, monies and reports.
  • Logs on and off terminal daily in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures in accordance with company standards.
  • Follows all company policies and procedures, including pari-mutuels wagering rules and Texas Racing Commission rules.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, or 2 year related experience and/or training; or combination
  • 2 years of related experience and/or training is beneficial, but new clerks will still complete required Mutuels and company-wide trainings.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of horseracing and/or pari-mutuel wagering is not required, but beneficial
  • 2 years accurate cash handling experience required
  • Bilingual skills beneficial
  • Able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Basic math and cash handling skills are highly important
  • Ability to maintain records and complete reports as required
  • Excellent oral communication skills required, including problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Ability to interact positively with employees and the general public
  • Ability to enter racing details in terminal quickly and accurately
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and be flexible with situations and assignments
  • Ability to work as part of a team, work with interruptions, and work with detailed information/data
