Job Description

Position Title: Music Teacher - Orchestra
Reports To: Principal
Overtime Status: Exempt
Pay Grade: 710

Job Summary

Performs professional work providing a broad range of teaching services, assisting students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each student's ability; does related work as required. Work is performed under the supervision of the School Principal.

Essential Duties
  • Teaching and training students in music, motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Facilitating specialized subject matter(s), motivating all students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Assisting in developing individualized instructional programs.
  • Instructing students in area(s) of specialization and subject matter specified in State law and administrative regulations of Portsmouth Public Schools.
  • Establishing and maintaining standards of behavior.
  • Encouraging students to think independently, develop, and express original ideas.
  • Evaluating students' progress, maintaining records, and preparing reports.
  • Communicating with students, counselors, and parents through conferences and other means.
  • Maintaining professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional materials.
  • Supervising student movement and escorting students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, and activities.
  • Participating in faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required.
  • Performing administrative functions in computer-based applications.
  • Modeling non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Performing related tasks as required.
Job Specifications / Physical Requirements

Thorough knowledge of music education principles, practices, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; effective communication skills; ability to operate a computer. Work involves light physical activity, including standing, walking, reaching, and occasional lifting. Environmental conditions vary between indoor and outdoor settings. Specializations like music may require additional physical or sensory capabilities.

Education and Experience

Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field. Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License, Postgraduate Professional License, or Provisional License with endorsement to teach music.
