Job summary

City of Oshkosh, WI, through the Oshkosh Public Museum, seeks a Visitor Services Associate to greet visitors, assist with admissions, and help with Museum Store sales and memberships.

You will operate the POS system, manage merchandise, and support staff with donor data while maintaining a welcoming, professional environment. This is a 15–20 hour per week, limited-term position with varied shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with opening/closing procedures and light maintenance for public areas and exhibitions.
  • Sets up and tears down for programs and assists with related tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Full Job Description

The Visitor Services Associate is responsible for providing friendly customer support to visitors, assisting with Museum Store sales, and supporting the staff at the Oshkosh Public Museum (OPM). As the first point of contact with visitors, Visitor Services staff maintain excellent customer service and professionalism while creating a welcoming environment for the public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

  • Visitor Experience: Greets and welcomes visitors in a friendly and courteous manner in purchasing admission, store merchandise, museum memberships, and in other interactions. Assists staff in handling customer service and visitor issues. Provides clear and accurate information on merchandise, exhibitions, programs, and membership.
  • Museum Store: Supports the success of the Museum Store by interacting with visitors to increase sales. Operates a point-of-sale system to conduct sales, monitor inventory, and produce reports. Assists with merchandising, inventorying, and organizing store products. Contributes to the overall success of the Museum Store through suggestive selling and membership sales to meet Museum revenue goals.
  • Staff Support: Supports the Museum Membership Program by assisting with communications and updating data in donor software. Assists with OPM opening and closing procedures. Along with other staff, performs light maintenance tasks and daily routine cleaning of public areas and exhibit spaces. Assists with setting up/tearing down for programs, such as setting up chairs or tables.
  • Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of related customer service experience preferred

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge regarding the use of computer databases.
  • Knowledge in the use of multi-line telephones, including transferring to appropriate personnel and returning telephone calls.
  • Skill in minor office tasks, such as processing mailings.
  • Possess excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to count money and make change.
  • Ability to process credit/debit cards.
  • Ability to learn and use a point-of-sale system and other computer-based programs.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, co-workers, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Equipment typically used in office and retail environments such as: Point of Sale System, multi-line telephone, personal computer with Windows operating system, copier, online databases, and various office and store tools such as labeler, stapler, scissors and calculator.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, equipment, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, or kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

This is a public-facing position. Work environment requires interaction with the public mainly indoors in Museum spaces and occasionally outdoors on Museum grounds. The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet.
