Job summary

State of South Carolina’s South Carolina State Museum seeks a detail-oriented Janitor to maintain cleanliness and safety across public and staff areas. Responsibilities include cleaning restrooms, galleries, offices, and more, plus setting up layouts for rentals and events.

The role requires 1–2 years of related experience (or training), a high school diploma, ability to operate cleaning equipment, and the physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for up to an hour.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1–2 years of custodial, housekeeping, or related experience.
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment (scrubbers, carpet cleaners).
• Ability to access storage areas and lift up to 25 lbs.
• Able to stand and walk for up to an hour.
• Weekdays, nights and weekends required.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Customer service experience.
• Knowledge of cleaning and disinfection practices (MSDS/OSHA).
• Knowledge of heavy cleaning machinery.
• Ability to keep accurate written records.

Responsibilities

• Cleaning restrooms, galleries, classrooms, offices, hallways, lobbies, corridors, elevators, stairways, lounges, and other work areas, as assigned.
• Assisting with museum special events, including setting up and taking down tables and chairs; emptying trash; cleaning areas before, after, and during events.
• Sweeping, scrubbing, mopping and polishing floors.
• Emptying wastebaskets; transporting trash to disposal area.
• Vacuuming and cleaning rugs and carpets.
• Dusting furniture and equipment.
• Polishing metalwork.
• Washing windows, door panels, and sills.
• Cleaning bathrooms and replenishing supplies.
• Assists with the cleaning and managing of school lunch programs.
• Performs general guest services.
• Performs other related duties, as necessary.
