Job summary

The South Carolina State Museum is seeking a detail‑oriented Janitor to maintain clean, safe, and welcoming public and staff spaces. The role reports to the Janitorial Lead and includes setup/teardown for rentals and special events, plus daily custodial duties across restrooms, galleries, classrooms, and offices.

Responsibilities include floor care, trash removal, window washing, and assisting with school lunch program cleaning. Basic equipment operation and physical stamina are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1-2 years of related experience or training.
• Must operate cleaning equipment such as scrubbers and carpet cleaners.
• Able to lift up to 25 lbs and stand/walk for extended periods.
• Weekdays, nights, and weekends required.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Customer service experience helpful.
• Knowledge of cleaning and disinfection practices and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Clean restrooms, galleries, classrooms, offices, hallways, lobbies, corridors, elevators, stairways, lounges and other areas.
• Set up and break down layouts for rentals and special events.
• Sweep, scrub, mop, polish floors and empty trash.
• Vacuum rugs and clean carpets, dust furniture and equipment.
• Polish metalwork and wash windows and sills.
• Assist with school lunch program cleaning and general guest services.
• Maintain accurate written records of tasks.
