Job summary

The Conservation Technician at Biltmore works under the direction of the conservators to assist in preserving objects within the estate's collections. The role focuses on preparing objects for permanent storage, documentation, preventive care, and conservation consulting as part of a professional museum team.

The incumbent supports leadership and the department, requires a bachelor’s degree with related experience, and emphasizes accuracy, safety, and collaborative work within a conservation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; related field strongly preferred (fine art, art conservation, art history).
  • At least two years of related experience; museum/conservation lab experience preferred.
  • Experience preparing objects for permanent storage or moves is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with conservation concepts and methodologies for historic materials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing objects for move to new storage including cleaning, documentation, photography, re-housing, packing.
  • Assist with maintenance and care of collections on display and in storage.
  • Assist with response to collection incidents and documentation of conservation procedures.
  • Contribute to examination, assessment, documentation and conservation treatment under standards.
  • Support research, technical studies, and problem solving related to treatments.
  • Follow safety protocols and use PPE per OSHA regulations.
