Job Description

POSITION: MLP Teacher Assistant

LOCATION: Wellford Academy of Science and Technology

QUALIFICATIONS:

REPORTS TO: Building Administrator and assigned Teacher(s)

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, provides general teaching assistance to students in the Multilingual Learner Program. Conducts such duties to support instruction as delivery of small group instruction, taking classroom notes, assisting students to and from class settings, redirection of students to tasks, monitoring students at all times, and maintaining confidentiality of students. May use computers in performing assigned tasks. Duties may be specialized to area of instruction, type of students, etc.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides individual and small-group instructional support to multilingual learners under the direction of the classroom teacher.
• Reinforces skills and concepts taught by the teacher and provides additional practice to help students access grade-level instruction.
• Supports students in developing English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through classroom activities and teacher-directed instruction.
• Assists students with understanding classroom directions, assignments, routines, academic vocabulary, and expectations.
• Supports multilingual learners during whole-group, small-group, and independent learning activities.
• Works with the classroom teacher to provide appropriate instructional supports based on students’ English language proficiency levels and academic needs.
• Encourages students to participate in classroom discussions, collaborative learning activities, and other opportunities to develop academic language.
• Helps students develop confidence, independence, self-advocacy, and a sense of belonging within the classroom and school community.
• Assists teachers with preparing, organizing, and adapting instructional materials to support student access and understanding.
• Monitors student progress and communicates observations regarding student performance, participation, and areas of need to the assigned teacher.
• Provides appropriate redirection and reinforces classroom expectations while maintaining a positive and supportive learning environment.
• Assists with classroom supervision and helps ensure the safety and well-being of students throughout the instructional day.
• Supports students during transitions, school activities, field trips, and other educational settings as assigned.
• Maintains student confidentiality and handles student information in accordance with district procedures and applicable requirements.
• Demonstrates respect for students’ home languages, cultures, backgrounds, and individual experiences.
• Collaborates professionally with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to support multilingual learners.
• Participates in training and professional learning related to multilingual learners, instructional support, and assigned responsibilities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Conducts duties in an office/school/work environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions. Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring lifting/moving of items up to 25 pounds. The job requires operating standard office equipment.
