JOB TITLE: Teacher – Special Education/Self-Contained 6th-8th Grade
QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate South Carolina Teaching Certification in Special Education (Multi-Categorical, LD, or Combination of Certification Areas)
General Statement of Job
Under limited supervision, employs classroom management techniques that result in an atmosphere for teaching/learning in which students can know what they are expected to do. The teacher is responsible for educating students in grades 6‑8, preparing them for academic challenges, fostering personal growth and development, collaborating with colleagues, communicating with parents, and staying abreast of best educational practices. Reports to the principal.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Has a prepared lesson plan sufficient for instructing lessons for grades 6‑8.
- Exercises proper care of materials and equipment.
- Communicates needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
- Arrives for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively with staff, parents, students, and administration.
- Accepts assistance, advice, and guidance from supervisors and makes a concerted effort toward improving skills.
- Shares ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
- Alert to the district’s, school’s, and own goals and priorities and seeks professional development as needed.
- Keeps in confidence information obtained in the course of professional service unless disclosure serves a professional purpose or is required by law.
- Respects the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals and communicates directly in any situation.
- Complies with state and local restrictions pertaining to controlled substances, tobacco, alcohol, and dress.
- Does not verbally or physically harass students.
- Does not use profanity in the presence of students.
- Does not have any sexual contact with students.
Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Physical Requirements: Sedentary work involving walking or standing some of the time, and exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

Essential Functions
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
- Plans a program of study that meets individual student needs, interests, and abilities while aligning with state standards.
- Establishes clear objectives for all classroom activities and communicates them to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable for student capability.
- Provides a programmed system of homework to support and reinforce daily learning activities.
- Utilizes effective classroom management strategies to create a conducive learning environment.
- Writes lesson plans, daily and long-term.
- Utilizes technology to enhance student learning.
- Maintains current teaching certificate and high‑qualified status per “No Child Left Behind” guidelines.
- Implements the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Assesses student accomplishments regularly and provides reports as required.
- Diagnoses learning disabilities and collaborates with district specialists as needed.
- Protects students, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintains accurate records as required by law, district policy, and administration.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Provides full cooperation with principal’s instructions and extra assignments.
- Records student attendance accurately.
- Follows curriculum standards, state rules, board policies, and school system procedures.
- Maintains positive relationships with home, parents, and community.
- Keeps parents informed of child progress and holds conferences as needed.
- Reports suspicions of abuse or neglect to appropriate agencies and principal.
- Abides by the SC Teacher Code of Ethics.
- Participates in required staff development sessions.
- Ensures strategic and effective use of district resources.
- Reports accidents or injuries promptly to the principal.
- Supervises students properly.
- Maintains current class records and submits them to the principal when requested.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, safe classroom.
- Administers assessments, records scores, interprets test results, and analyzes data to improve instruction.
- Plans, prepares, implements, and assesses instructional lessons that teach standards and meet student needs.
- Maintains classroom and school order supporting student learning.
