Job Description

This position is responsible for specialized work by assisting teachers in instructing and directing the activities of students in assigned classes to provide a well‑organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment. It also involves assisting school administrators and staff with various administrative and clerical functions as requested, under occasional supervision.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists students with exercises and class activities; concentrates efforts with small groups of students and individuals as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly classroom; assists in cleaning and storing materials after activities and provides classroom coverage as needed.
  • Reinforces all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher.
  • Models proper behavior and play.
  • Records daily attendance, grades assignments, records/analyses test scores, substitutes as needed, sets up special projects, escorts children, monitors behavior, packs/unpacks communication folders, runs errands, etc.
  • Collects and receives monies for monthly activity fees, school fees, school pictures, field trips, meal fees, etc.
  • Distributes textbooks, technology devices, and other materials; maintains inventory; assists with troubleshooting computer equipment and software; submits help‑desk tickets; may assist with invoicing for lost or damaged equipment.
  • Supervises and assists students when unloading/loading buses, in halls, on field trips, during testing, during lunch, and on school grounds.
  • Prepares daily snacks for students.
  • Assists individual children with special needs and/or who require special attention.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in special programs or projects as assigned.
  • Attends staff meetings, in‑service training programs.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance in responsibilities areas.
  • Operates a variety of equipment (computer, printer, copier, etc.) and uses clerical, arts and crafts, and instructional supplies.
  • Interacts and communicates with teachers, principals, school staff, district staff, students, parents, volunteers, and the public.
  • Attends training, seminars and workshops to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
Additional Job Functions
  • Performs routine office tasks such as preparing records and reports, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, ordering office supplies, etc.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience

At least two years of study or 60 semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education; or an associate's degree (or higher); or an approved state or local academic assessment that measures the paraprofessional's knowledge of and ability to assist in instruction at the appropriate level. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

  • Intelligence: Requires applying principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and dealing with varied variables; interpreting written or oral instructions; learning complex principles and making independent judgments.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow instructions; teach students.
  • Numeric Aptitude: Requires applying arithmetic and mathematical formulas, determining percentages and decimals, etc.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires inspecting items for proper length, width, and shape.
  • Motor Coordination: Requires hand‑eye coordination in using office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Requires handling office items and equipment; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Requires distinguishing colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Requires dealing with people beyond instruction; adaptable under stress and tight deadlines.
