Job summary

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, Maryland seeks a multi-trade senior maintenance mechanic to join the Maintenance and Facilities department. The role performs semi-skilled building maintenance, basic repairs and routine inspections to ensure operational readiness.

Responsibilities include assisting journey level trades staff, reading and writing work orders, and maintaining safety standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and four years of related work experience.
• Ability to exert up to 70 lbs and work at heights up to 35 feet.
• Knowledge of safety practices for building maintenance.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work in a team.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders and reports.

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, Maryland seeks a multi-trade senior maintenance mechanic in its Maintenance and Facilities department.

Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled tasks in building construction, building maintenance and preventative maintenance and make repairs
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections and repairs of buildings, equipment, roadways and grounds
• Assist journey level trades personnel in skilled maintenance and repairs
• Ensure operational readiness and safety of equipment
• Prepare work summary reports
• Read write and interpret work orders and reports

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of related work experience are required.

• The ability to exert force up to 70 lbs.
• Work in, on, over and under mechanical equipment and at heights up to 35 feet
• General knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to building maintenance
• Work in hazardous and confined environments and during adverse weather and temperature conditions
• Ability to follow oral and read written instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively and work in a team environment

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Four years related work experience, three years of which must have been in the trade area where assigned.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

• General knowledge of and skill in a variety of semi-skilled building construction or maintenance and repair practices and techniques used in the trade areas where assigned; of safety practices and procedures related to the assigned trade areas
• General knowledge and skill in the use of tools and equipment of the trade
• Skill in inspecting and making adjustments, repairs, and replacements to building fixtures and mechanical equipment
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• To communicate effectively
• To prepare estimates of time and materials required for assigned work
• To apply quality and safety standards
• To complete logs and prepare records and reports
• To work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery
• To work at heights up to 35 feet
• To manipulate heavy equipment, tools, supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.
• To concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment
• To work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions
• To wear and work in personal protective equipment

Conditions of Employment

• Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job
• A non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland may be required
• Candidates selected for employment may be required to be trained to work with asbestos
• Employees in this job class assigned to work with equipment containing CFC refrigerants must achieve and maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law
• Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience

Compensation

Regular Salary Range $53,250 - $58,911
