Job summary

Ohio Department of Public Safety – Ohio State Highway Patrol seeks a Motor Vehicle Inspector to perform safety inspections on a variety of vehicles and document results. You will use OSHP databases, prepare inspection decals for compliant vehicles, and assist owners with necessary adjustments to ensure roadworthiness.

Position requires willingness to work at HP Warren DHQ, full-time schedules, and a valid driver's license. Applicants should clearly describe computer experience in their history.

Qualifications

• 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair &/or mechanical vehicle inspections.
• AND 6 mo. exp. utilizing personal computer & associated business office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction and in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, & salvage vehicles to determine safety and proper equipment.
• Enter & retrieve information using OSHP databases.
• Complete inspection forms & affix inspection decals to passing vehicles.
• Operate state owned inspection vehicle to transport equipment.
• Inform owners/operators of repairs or adjustments necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition.

What You'll Do As A Motor Vehicle Inspector

• Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, & salvage vehicles to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped, or that equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law by entering & exiting vehicles & bends, stoops & utilizes mechanics' "creeper" in order to crawl under vehicle to visually check vehicle mechanical components.
• Enter & retrieve information using numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases.
• Complete inspection forms & affix inspection decals to those vehicles which pass.
• Operate state owned motor vehicle inspection vehicle to transport equipment used in motor vehicle inspection.
• Inform the owner &/or operator of repairs or adjustments which are necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition.

Minimum Qualifications

• 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair &/or mechanical vehicle inspections;
• AND 6 mo. exp. utilizing personal computer & associated business office applications (Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook.);
• AND formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary;
• AND valid driver's license.
• Or equivalant of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

POSITION SPECIFIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid Driver’s license required.
