Job summary

State of Ohio is hiring a Motor Vehicle Inspector in Southington, OH. You will perform detailed inspections of various vehicles to determine safety compliance and proper equipment, using OSHP databases and documenting findings.

The role requires basic automotive knowledge, strong attention to detail, and good verbal/written communication to explain repairs and maintain safety standards. Full-time, on-site work with union OCSEA benefits.

Qualifications

• 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair &/or mechanical vehicle inspections.
• 6 mo. exp. utilizing personal computer & associated business office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Arithmetic education including addition and subtraction and English vocabulary usage.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles and salvage vehicles to check safety and proper equipment.
• Enter and retrieve information using OSHP databases and complete inspection forms.
• Affix inspection decals to vehicle passthroughs and inform owners of necessary repairs for safety.

What You'll Do As A Motor Vehicle Inspector

• Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self-assembled vehicles, & salvage vehicles to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped, or that equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law by entering & exiting vehicles & bends, stoops & utilizes mechanics' "creeper" in order to crawl under vehicle to visually check vehicle mechanical components.
• Enter & retrieve information using numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases.
• Complete inspection forms & affix inspection decals to those vehicles which pass.
• Operate state owned motor vehicle inspection vehicle to transport equipment used in motor vehicle inspection.
• Inform the owner &/or operator of repairs or adjustments which are necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition.

Qualifications

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Works outside exposed to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, burns from hot engines, fast moving vehicles, highway noise & angry vehicle owners; conducts inspections in confined spaces under automotive vehicles utilizing a creeper.
