Job description

The Motor Fuel Tax Manager is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timely maintenance of motor fuel tax rules and transaction set-up within Right Angle. The role ensures that new and existing transaction types are configured appropriately and integrate seamlessly with the company’s tax compliance systems and processes, ERP, billing, collection, and operational teams. The manager responds promptly to business requests for new transaction types, process changes, and rule updates.

Working closely with the Tax Operations Motor Fuel Manager, Accounting, ERP, and billing/collection teams, this individual develops well-supported tax positions, identifies risks and practical alternatives, and ensures tax compliance considerations are addressed before changes are implemented. The manager coordinates facts and subject-matter input, communicates requirements and decisions clearly, drives projects through implementation and validation, and elevates significant risks or decisions to senior tax leadership on a timely basis.

The role includes leadership of one to two junior team members, with responsibility for providing direction, reviewing work, developing technical and problem-solving capabilities, and ensuring accountability for timely execution. The successful candidate brings strong communication and project-management skills, intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and a proactive desire to improve processes and add value.

What You’ll Do
  • Partner closely with the Motor Fuel Tax Functional Lead and VP of Tax to support strategic business growth, acquisitions, new markets, and other key projects through early identification and implementation of tax, systems, and process considerations.
  • Serve as a central point of coordination among business stakeholders and subject-matter experts, ensuring timely communication, clear ownership, and progress toward resolution.
  • Evaluate and respond promptly to business requests for new transaction types, rule changes, and process updates; translate business facts into clear system and tax requirements.
  • Lead the end-to-end implementation of rule and set-up changes, including requirements gathering, testing, validation, documentation, and post-implementation follow-up.
  • Manage the accuracy, maintenance, and ongoing enhancement of motor fuel tax rules and transaction set-up within RightAngle and PDI.
  • Manage implementation of rate changes, tax rules, and regulatory requirements, ensuring that they are accurately reflected in all applicable systems, processes, and documentation. Develop and document well-supported positions for new or changing transactions, including key assumptions, risks, alternatives, and recommended approaches.
  • Coordinate with the Motor Fuel Tax Operations Manager to identify tax compliance requirements and ensure RightAngle and PDI configuration supports accurate reporting, filing, and audit-ready processes.
  • Partner with the Accounting, ERP, billing and collection, and operational teams to ensure system changes integrate effectively across financial, billing, compliance, and business processes.
  • Maintain clear documentation of RightAngle and PDI rules, transaction logic, decisions, and process changes to support consistency, training, compliance, and future scalability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and system functionality that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and the ability to support a growing motor fuel business.
  • Lead, coach, and develop one to two junior team members; provide direction, establish priorities, review work for accuracy and completeness, and build their technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Drive assigned projects and recurring responsibilities to completion with strong organization, follow-through, sound judgment, and a proactive focus on adding value.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related field preferred.
  • 6-8 years of motor fuels tax, excise tax, indirect tax, accounting, or related experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of motor fuels or excise tax, including experience in one or more areas such as compliance, audits, licensing, exemptions, taxability, or tax research.
  • Experience translating business requirements and tax rules into system, process, or transaction set-up requirements; experience with RightAngle or comparable fuel, tax determination, ERP, or billing systems strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional tax, systems, process-improvement, regulatory-change, acquisition, or strategic-growth projects from requirements development through implementation and validation.
  • Ability to identify risks, evaluate alternatives, develop well-supported recommendations, and elevate significant tax, systems, or business decisions appropriately.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to gather facts from diverse stakeholders and communicate clear, practical, leadership-ready recommendations.
  • Experience leading, coaching, or reviewing the work of junior team members preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills; experience with data tools, tax research platforms, tax determination systems, fuel systems, workflow tools, automation, or AI-enabled analysis preferred.
  • Ability to operate independently, manage ambiguity, coordinate multiple stakeholders, recognize escalation points, and drive complex work to resolution.
