Job summary

A school district in Michigan is seeking a Motor Equipment Mechanic responsible for maintaining and repairing Transportation Department vehicles, including school buses and trucks. Ideal candidates should have at least five years of experience with buses or heavy trucks, hold certification as a Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic, and possess a valid Michigan Driver's License with the appropriate CDL endorsements. Qualifications

• 5+ years experience on buses or heavy trucks.
• Certification by the State of Michigan as Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic.
• Valid Michigan Driver's License with CDL-Type C and B including a P endorsement.
• Valid Michigan CDL-Type C and B with P endorsement.
• Willing to work any shift.
• Strong knowledge of gasoline/diesel engines used in school systems.
• Strong knowledge of automotive electrical systems.
• Strong knowledge of braking systems and repair/overhaul.
• Knowledge of fuel systems and tune-up methods.
• Knowledge of steering systems repair.
• Prior experience in automotive/heavy vehicle maintenance desirable.
• Physically able to perform duties.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repair of all Transportation Department vehicles.
• Conduct routine safety checks on buses.
• Maintain maintenance records for each vehicle.
• Cooperate with Head Mechanic on maintenance records for each vehicle.
• Assist in other repairs outside the engine compartment as time allows.
• Keep the garage clean and well organized.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor/Head Mechanic.
• Report unsafe or hazardous conditions.

Qualifications

• High school graduate with a minimum of five years experience on buses or heavy trucks.
• Certification by the State of Michigan as Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic or thorough knowledge of same.
• Must be willing to accept further training opportunities (seminars, workshops, etc.) as prescribed and work towards certification in the State of Michigan Mechanics Competency. Also will be required to take a test.
• Must acquire a valid Michigan Driver's License with a CDL-Type C and B that includes a P endorsement.
• Be willing to work any shift.
• Thorough knowledge of the procedures and methods used in maintenance and repair of gasoline/diesel engines of all types used in the school system.
• Thorough knowledge of all automotive electrical systems including ignition, charging, starting and lighting circuits and ability to service and repair same.
• Thorough knowledge of both automotive and heavy duty braking systems (air, hydraulic, vacuum over hydraulic) and ability to service, repair and overhaul all types of brake systems.
• Thorough knowledge of gasoline/diesel engine fuel systems, ability to service and repair same, fuel pumps, etc.
• Thorough knowledge of engine tune-up methods and procedures and ability to perform same.
• Thorough knowledge of and ability to service, repair and rebuild all types of vehicle steering systems.
• Previous experience and training in all phases of automotive and heavy vehicle maintenance and repair desirable.
• Physically able to perform above assignments.

Performance Responsibilities

1. Responsible for maintenance and repair of all Transportation Department vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment, including, but not limited to school buses, trucks, cars, tractors, lawn mowers.
2. Perform all work on all diesel engines themselves and their related parts such as:

• Valve train adjustments
• Engine overhauls
• Installation of water pumps, compressor, turbo chargers, etc.
• Seal replacements

Perform routine safety checks as buses are maintained.

Cooperate with Head Mechanic on the necessary maintenance records for each vehicle.

As time allows, cooperate and assist where needed in all other repairs necessary outside engine compartment.

Share the responsibility of maintaining a clean and well organized garage.

Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor and/or Head Mechanic.

Report any and all unsafe or hazardous conditions.
