Job summary

Macomb Intermediate School District seeks a mechanic for the afternoon shift to inspect, repair, and maintain district vehicles, ensuring safety and reliability. Responsibilities include diagnosing issues, performing major and minor repairs, and keeping precise records.

A valid Michigan Mechanic’s certification and appropriate CDL endorsements are required, with four years of bus/truck experience preferred.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Michigan Mechanic’s Certification in specified truck categories.
• ASE Master Heavy Duty Truck Certification preferred.
• Four years of bus/truck repair experience.
• Owns required cabinet and tools.
• Pass DOT physical; able to perform essential functions.
• Dependable, initiative, honest.
• Neat appearance and appropriate clothing.
• Cooperative with coworkers and supervisor.
• Able to read and express technical directions clearly.
• Possess or obtain CDL with Group A, Passenger, and S endorsements.
• Pass criminal background check as required.

Responsibilities

• Inspect vehicles weekly, monthly, and annually for safety and economy.
• Report mechanical failures that could be unsafe.
• Attend in-service training to stay updated on changes.
• Keep records and parts inventory as required.
• Maintain CDL with endorsements current.
• Perform vehicle repairs as needed.
• Maintain inventory of parts and supplies.
• Keep tools and workspace clean and safe.
• Operate and maintain road service equipment.
• Drive bus on scheduled routes.
• Perform major and minor repairs across vehicle systems.
• Suggest cost-saving maintenance options.
• Stay current with federal/state requirements for school transport.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MECHANIC (Afternoon Shift)

QUALIFICATIONS

1. 1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. 2. Possess State of Michigan Mechanic’s Certification in appropriate repair categories: Master Heavy Duty (Truck), Engine Gas and Diesel (Truck), Drive Train (Truck), Suspension and Steering (Truck), Brakes and Braking System (Truck), Electrical System (Truck) and Transmission (Truck).
3. 3. Formal mechanical training preferred with ASE Master Heavy Duty Truck Certification.
4. 4. Four years of previous successful bus or truck experience, performing the work responsibilities described herein. Understanding and ability to properly care for and maintain all of the district’s motorized vehicles.
5. 5. Possess cabinet and tools necessary to perform responsibilities of the job.
6. 6. Satisfactorily pass a DOT physical examination. Must be able to perform essential functions of job (strength/dexterity).
7. 7. Dependability, initiative, self-reliance and honesty.
8. 8. Continually present a neat appearance; well groomed, with clean and appropriate clothing.
9. 9. Capable of getting along with co-workers and supervisor, and able to meet with others in a courteous, friendly and helpful manner.
10. 10. Capable of reading directions and literature in the field with understanding, and the ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
11. 11. Possess or obtain a Commercial Driver License - Group A endorsement, Passenger endorsement, “S” endorsement, and demonstrate ability to skillfully drive all the district’s motorized vehicles.
12. 12. Must pass criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation.

RESPONSIBILITIES SHALL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO

1. 1. Make weekly, monthly and annual inspections of vehicles, or as required, in order to ensure a minimum of equipment failure and a maximum of safety and economy of operation.
2. 2. Report to supervisor any mechanical failure or defect of vehicle which could render it unsafe for operation.
3. 3. Attend in-service training courses that will upgrade knowledge and skills and keep abreast of manufacturing changes.
4. 4. Keep records and reports, including parts and supplies, as required.
5. 5. Keep current a CDL with Group A, Passenger, and “S” endorsements.
6. 6. Make repairs to vehicles as needed.
7. 7. Maintain a proper inventory of parts and supplies.
8. 8. Maintain tools, equipment and work spaces in a clean, safe and orderly condition.
9. 9. Operate and maintain road service equipment.
10. 10. Drive bus on scheduled routes.
11. 11. Perform major and minor repairs to all parts of all vehicles. Examples of mechanical duties include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:
12. a. Minor daily reports
13. b. Tune ups
14. c. Exhaust system
15. d. Electrical system
16. e. Drive train
17. f. Steering
18. g. Brake System
19. h. Engine repair, overhaul, or replacement
20. i. Body repair
21. j. Suspension
22. k. Electrical
23. 12. Make recommendations as appropriate that may reduce vehicle repairs.
24. 13. Keep current of all Federal and State requirements pertaining to school transportation vehicles.
25. 14. Perform other duties as assigned.
