Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a Mosquito Control Maintenance Worker to join the Mosquito Control Division. You will perform drainage maintenance and pesticide applications to protect community health, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in all weather conditions.

Requirements include a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Registered Technician’s License or Category 8 Pesticide Applicator’s License within six months. Full-time, with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications: Any equivalent combination of experience and training providing required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Preferably six (6) months of experience in labor, maintenance, or construction work.
• Must have a current and valid driver’s license.

Your responsibilities will include:Perform maintenance work requiring the utilization of specific skills associated with drainage maintenance and the application of pesticides for mosquito control.Remove objects from work areas that impede drainage; bush and grade ditches to maintain efficient water runoff; apply larvicide to areas harboring mosquito larvae and pupae, avoiding the potential to harbor and reduce mosquito populations; apply adulticides in areas with known high levels of mosquito activity.Apply herbicide to areas where vegetation obstructs proper drainage; cut/ clear trees and heavy brush to gain access to drainage areas; mix and apply chemicals per specifications on the label for field applicationsLift materials and other items to 50 lbs. regularly.Applicants will be required to obtain and maintain either a Registered Technician’s License or Category 8 Pesticide Applicator’s License within six (6) months of employmentWork Location: 1848 Pleasant Ridge Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23457A valid driver’s license is required.Position is ALPHA I and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, snow, etc.) and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.A pre-employment physical is required – This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing.
