Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to perform maintenance tasks for the Stormwater Operations group, including pumping stations and related equipment. The role requires physical labor, use of hand and power tools, and the ability to work in all weather, including nights and emergencies.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and three years of related experience, plus a valid Class A CDL.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus three years’ experience in related maintenance roles.
• Must possess a valid Class A Virginia or North Carolina CDL.
• All employees may be required to work hours beyond normal schedule and wear PPE as designated.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repair of stormwater pumping stations and related equipment.
• Operate hand and power tools; lift up to 50 pounds.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot stormwater pump issues; follow work orders and monitor alarms.
• Prepare written documentation for work activities and assist contractors during complex repairs.
• Work in all weather conditions and be prepared for nights, weekends, holidays, or standby as needed.

Apply now to join an organization where you truly make a difference.Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to perform a variety of duties and maintenance tasks associated with the Stormwater Operations group, such as:Perform heavy manual labor in connection with the maintenance and repair of Stormwater pumping stations and related equipment.Perform manual labor using hand and power tools, including picks, shovels, chainsaws, and other related equipment, to complete assigned maintenance and operational tasks.Lifting without assistance, heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds.Operate a motor vehicle and ensure the proper tools, equipment, and materials are available to complete repairs.Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting stormwater utility problems/mechanical pump failures and/or pump malfunctions, follow work orders, monitor and respond to alarms at stormwater pumping stations, and prioritize tasks to accomplish repairs.Notify supervisor of significant operational problems with pump stations; work with contractors to identify pump station problems; and assist contractors during more complex pump station repairs.Prepare written documents for work activities.Install and repair permanent barricades to make the public aware of a hazardous situation.Work in all types of weather conditions as well as nights, weekends, holidays, and standby as needed.Safely access and work from extension ladders and within confined spaces while performing assigned duties.Maintain and repair pump stations, motors, pond aerators, and sluice gates.Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 6:30 am – 5:00 pm.Mandatory pre-employment physical.**Class A CDL Required**CDL Hiring Bonus –Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:$1,000 with first paycheck$1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)$2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)** This position is ALPHA I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, snow, etc.) in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies. **Additional requirements:• DMV Transcript: Yes• CDL: Yes• Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse: Yes• CPS Check: No• Physical: Yes• Respirator: No• Psychological Screening: No• Polygraph: No• At Will: NoMinimum Requirements:Minimum Qualifications: High school or GED plus three (3) years’ experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Bridge Maintenance Worker, Pump Station Maintenance Worker, or Bridge Construction Worker; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid Class A Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Drivers License. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing.
