Job summary

General Electric Credit Union in Cincinnati seeks a Mortgage Underwriting Manager to lead a team of underwriters and processors. You will direct daily workflows, evaluate risks, and ensure adherence to investor guidelines while delivering exceptional member service.

You will guide staffing, performance evaluations, and coaching, and oversee underwrite activity for conventional, FHA/VA, and jumbo loans, aligning with regulatory requirements and GECU policies.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years mortgage underwriting experience.
  • Prior leadership experience required.
  • Must maintain the required NMLS designation.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a team of underwriters and processors to assess applications and ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Manage daily workflow and staffing to meet KPIs and SLAs.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Ensure timely processing and underwriting while delivering strong member service.
  • Collaborate with mortgage function teams to promote cooperation across the department.
  • Underwrite a full range of mortgage loans, including complex/jumbo and large balance loans.
  • Review income, collateral and credit documentation; verify appraisals and compliance with program specs.
  • Ensure adherence to federal/state regulations and secondary market guidelines (FHLMC/FHLB).

Mortgage Underwriting Manager
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Overview:

The Mortgage Underwriting Manager will direct a team of underwriters and processors to assess applications, evaluate risks and ensure compliance with industry regulations, company and investor guidelines. This role requires demonstrating decision-making skills, analytical thinking, communication, interpersonal abilities and leadership.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily workflow of Mortgage Underwriters and Mortgage Processors and ensure GECU KPIs and SLAs are achieved
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained
  • Deliver timely, constructive performance evaluations
  • Administer employee discipline in accordance with policy
  • Ensure personnel comply with attendance policies
  • Provide ongoing coaching and training for direct reports
  • Ensure processing and underwriting are completed timely and efficiently while delivering exceptional member service
  • Collaborate with GECU team members to promote cooperation across the mortgage function.
  • Underwrite a full range of mortgage loans with the highest lending authority, including complex/jumbo/large balance portfolio loans
  • Maintain a broad knowledge of first mortgage refinances, purchases, construction, HELOCs, fixed-rate Home Equity loans, Equity Rich fixed-rate loans, and Equity Rich lines of credit transactions
  • Review and verify loan applications and supporting documentation for income, collateral and creditworthiness based on program and product specifications
  • Review property appraisals to confirm collateral value is properly documented
  • Ensure loans comply with current secondary market standards and GECU portfolio guidelines
  • Ensure underwriting practices are compliant under fair lending requirements
  • Must understand and comply with all required federal and state regulations associated with this position
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of ten years mortgage underwriting experience
  • Prior leadership experience required

  • Strong time management and organizational skills who can work in a fast-paced environment

  • Must be proficient in Secondary Market guidelines, such as FHLMC and FHLB.
  • Experienced in underwriting a variety of government mortgage loan types, including FHA and VA loans.
  • Understand and follow mortgage-related operational procedures
  • Must maintain the required NMLS designation.
