Job summary

General Electric Credit Union is seeking a Mortgage Default Specialist to act as a subject matter expert in mortgage loss mitigation, foreclosure, investor requirements, and complex default cases. The role oversees cases, procedures, testing, and training to build a scalable mortgage-default operating model.

The specialist will manage referrals, review hardship packages, prepare recommendations, and coordinate with attorneys, vendors, and internal teams.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of mortgage servicing, mortgage default, loss mitigation, foreclosure, or default claims experience.
  • Direct experience with investor requirements, attorneys, preservation vendors, appraisers, controls, procedures, or testing strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in a credit union or community bank preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage complex mortgage default cases from referral through resolution, foreclosure, REO dispositions, or closure.
  • Review hardship packages, financial information, servicing history, deadlines, legal status, and collateral condition.
  • Prepare recommendations, monitor conditions, and elevate exceptions, complaints, legal concerns, and investor conflicts.
  • Prepare and monitor foreclosure referrals, attorney activity, legal milestones, expenses, valuations, and exceptions.
  • Assist with document preparation for loss mitigation workout options.
  • Act as the primary contact and liaison between internal teams, external contacts, and third party vendors.
  • Identify gaps within existing processes and implement solutions or new procedures to improve efficiency and service levels and reduce costs.
  • Follow up on documentation and monitor accuracy of timing in account handling.
  • Resolve disputed transactions in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Provide data to management on a weekly/monthly basis in preparation for monthly reporting.
  • Adhere to the company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls.

Overview:

The Mortgage Default Specialist will be a subject matter expert in the department’s technical resource for mortgage loss mitigation, foreclosure, investor requirements, property preservation, REO support, and complex mortgage default cases. The specialist manages assigned cases, develops procedures and requirements, supports testing and implementation, trains team members, identifies control weaknesses and helps build a scalable mortgage-default operating model.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of regulations and guidelines set forth in the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act (RESPA)
  • Ability to serve as Subject Matter Expert and handle complex situations efficiently
  • Excellent communication skills with high degree of ability to talk to members, especially with matters of sensitivity and conflict resolution
  • Strong analytical skills and decisive decision-making skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • High degree of professionalism especially when working with external parties and attorneys
