Job summary

Mauch Chunk Trust Company seeks an experienced Residential Mortgage & Consumer Loan Underwriter to evaluate and decide on mortgage and consumer loan applications. This role analyzes income, assets, liabilities, credit history, and property values to ensure credit quality and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will apply Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and mortgage insurance guidelines, determine eligibility, and communicate decisions clearly to originators and customers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field preferred.
  • Three to five years of lending or underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of residential mortgage and consumer lending practices.
  • Working knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and mortgage insurance underwriting guidelines.
  • Knowledge of applicable lending laws and regulations.
  • Ability to review personal and business tax returns, financial statements, and other financial documentation.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, personal finance, credit analysis, and cash-flow analysis.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate difficult credit decisions professionally.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and lending-related software.
  • Experience with Finastra Mortgagebot is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, and underwrite residential mortgage and consumer loan applications to ensure credit quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate borrowers' financial strength and repayment capacity by analyzing income, assets, liabilities, credit history, DTI, LTV, and other factors.
  • Conduct cash-flow analysis and review financial information for small-business borrowers.
  • Apply Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and mortgage insurance guidelines for loans.
  • Determine loan eligibility and document approval conditions.
  • Make approval/denial/adverse-action decisions within lending authority.
  • Identify alternative loan structures to help applications qualify.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and outstanding requirements to stakeholders.
  • Contact applicants to explain denied loan requests professionally and clearly.
  • Maintain accuracy and compliance in the origination process using the LOS.
  • Partner with mortgage loan originators and personal banking staff to ensure efficient processing.
  • Maintain knowledge of lending laws and Bank products; identify opportunities to cross-sell.
  • Participate in educational opportunities and professional organizations to expand knowledge.
  • Comply with Bank policies and federal regulations including BSA/AML and OFAC.
  • Serve as a project leader for special assignments and duties.

Job description

Mauch Chunk Trust Company is seeking an experienced Residential Mortgage & Consumer Loan Underwriter to evaluate and make sound credit decisions on residential mortgage and consumer loan applications.

This position reviews borrowers' financial information, assesses credit risk, determines loan viability, and approves or denies requests in accordance with Bank policies, secondary-market guidelines, and applicable lending regulations. The successful candidate will combine strong analytical skills with sound judgment and a commitment to providing an efficient, transparent lending experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, analyze, and underwrite residential mortgage and consumer loan applications to ensure credit quality, business value, and compliance with Bank standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate borrowers' financial strength and repayment capacity by analyzing income, assets, liabilities, credit history, debt-to-income ratios, loan-to-value ratios, property valuations, and other relevant factors.
  • Conduct cash-flow analysis and review financial information for small-business borrowers.
  • Apply current Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and MGIC guidelines to loans intended for secondary-market sale or requiring mortgage insurance.
  • Determine loan eligibility and establish and document appropriate approval conditions.
  • Make approval, denial, counteroffer, and adverse-action decisions within assigned lending authority and loan specifications.
  • Identify alternative loan structures or requirements that may allow a request to qualify when the original application cannot be approved.
  • Clearly communicate underwriting decisions and outstanding requirements to mortgage loan originators, personal bankers, customers, and other involved parties.
  • Contact applicants when necessary to explain denied loan requests professionally and clearly.
  • Maintain accuracy and compliance throughout the underwriting and origination process using the Bank's loan origination system.
  • Partner closely with mortgage loan originators and personal banking staff to support effective customer communication and efficient application processing.
  • Maintain current knowledge of lending laws, regulations, underwriting standards, and the Bank's products and services.
  • Identify opportunities to recommend appropriate Bank products and services based on customer needs.
  • Participate in educational opportunities and professional organizations to maintain and expand job knowledge.
  • Comply with all Bank policies, procedures, and applicable federal regulations, including BSA/AML and OFAC requirements.
  • Serve as a project leader for special assignments as needed.
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities and perform other related duties as assigned.
