Job summary

Wayne UNC Health Care in Wayne County, NC is seeking a Monitoring Technician/Nursing Assistant I to oversee telemetry monitoring and provide timely notification to RNs of rhythm changes. You will perform Nursing Assistant I duties under supervision and contribute to a collaborative care team.

Responsibilities include interpreting EKG rhythms, recording data, documenting care, and maintaining patient safety.

Qualifications

• Completion of Basic EKG training with a minimum passing score of 85%.
• Completion of state approved Level I Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or its equivalent.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required, any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.

Responsibilities

• Monitor telemetry and interpret all EKG rhythms to provide timely information to RNs.
• Provide direct patient care by preparing patients for monitoring and assisting with routine bedside tasks.
• Notify the supervising nurse promptly of abnormal vital signs or changes in condition.

Summary

The Monitoring Technician/Nursing Assistant I is responsible for the on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and providing RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern and prior variances. Works cooperatively as part of a team and under the supervision of an RN/LPN. Also performs the duties and responsibilities of a Nursing Assistant I as directed.

Responsibilities

• 1. Continually monitors patients on telemetry by interpreting and recording all EKG rhythms.
  • a. Provides direct patient care by performing patient preparation for monitoring.
  • b. As appropriate, monitors O2 sats and blood pressure.
  • c. Understands parameters indicating when to alert the supervising nurse.
  • d. Provides and accurately processes telemetry monitor records and other documents.
  • e. Ensures all patient care equipment is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any issues to management and removes malfunctioning equipment from service.
• 2. Provides quality patient care which may include but is not limited to the following:
  • a. Measures vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, etc.
  • b. Provides personal care such as bathing, mouth care, skin care, hair care, nail care, bed making, and dressing/undressing.
  • c. Assists with nutritional needs of patients by performing tasks such as preparing patients for meal time and feeding patients when needed.
  • d. Assist patients with elimination needs through tasks such as use of bedpan/urinal, bowel/bladder training, collection of specimens, and perineal/catheter care.
  • e. Measure height and weight.
  • f. Measure and record intake and output.
• 3. Accurately documents patient care as provided and according to unit specific standards.
• 4. Promotes effective communication between patients, teammates, physicians, and visitors.
  • a. Promptly reports abnormal vital signs and changes in the patient’s condition to the primary nurse or charge nurse.
  • b. Communicates pertinent patient information during handoff report to other teammates
  • c. Communicates patient or family questions or concerns in a timely manner.
• 5. Ensures teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem-solving interactions.
  • a. Accepts delegated tasks and assignments that are within their scope of practice.
  • b. Seeks help when needed and provides help to others when available.
• 6. Ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for self, patients, and teammates.
  • a. Utilizes proper body mechanics when turning/repositioning; transferring; assisting with ambulation; range of motion exercises; and using lifts, beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
  • b. Ensures patient safety through utilizing items such as side rails, call bells, and mitts/restraints.
  • c. Follows proper infection control techniques which include items such as handwashing, isolation techniques, and standard precautions.
• 7. Responds appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
  • a. Recognizes signs and symptoms of distress and promptly notifies appropriate teammates.
  • b. Obtains needed supplies/equipment in a timely manner.
  • c. Participates in CPR or other needed emergency care within their scope of practice.
• 8. Provides assistance and customer service to patients and visitors.
  • a. Strives to develop rapport and trust with patients and visitors.
  • b. Adheres to behavior expectations and utilizes Carolina Care techniques.
  • c. Provides blameless apology and works toward resolution of patient/visitor concerns.

Other information

Education

• Successful completion of Basic EKG training with a minimum passing score of 85%.

Licensure/Certification

• EKG Monitoring Certification preferred.
• Current Listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I registry.
• Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.

Experience

• Prior experience as a Nursing Assistant or in a health care setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to interpret and understand EKGs and arrhythmias.
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of monitoring equipment.
• Ability to maintain competency in non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) and pulse oximetry (SpO2) as appropriate.
• Ability to provide excellent patient and customer care to all patients and their visitors as well as internal and external teammates.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
• Able to learn new software rapidly. Knowledge of EMR/Epic preferred.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
