Job description

ACI Mechanical & HVAC Sales is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Modular Fabrication Specialist to support our growing modular steel support business.

This position is responsible for the shop fabrication, preparation, assembly, and quality control of Sikla modular steel support systems, including framing, pipe support components, connectors, and related products. The Fabrication Specialist will take project drawings, fabrication details, bills of material, and production requirements and turn them into accurate, installation-ready assemblies and material packages.

This is a hands-on position that requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, safe operation of fabrication equipment, and the ability to work efficiently while maintaining a high level of quality.

As an employee of ACI, you will also be an employee-owner through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Employee ownership means each team member has a direct stake in the long-term success of the company and is expected to approach their work with an ownership mindset - taking pride in quality, using materials and resources responsibly, supporting teammates, and making decisions that strengthen our customers, our company, and the value we build together.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate modular steel support systems according to approved drawings, details, cut lists, and bills of material.
  • Measure, mark, and accurately cut modular steel profiles to specified dimensions.
  • Assemble frames, racks, supports, equipment skids, pipe support assemblies, and other modular structures.
  • Install connectors, brackets, end supports, pipe support components, and thread-forming fasteners according to manufacturer requirements.
  • Perform drilling, cutting, grinding, deburring, and other material preparation as required.
  • Complete limited welding or conventional steel fabrication when required for connections to primary steel or other project-specific applications.
  • Build individual support assemblies and larger prefabricated modules for delivery to customer jobsites.

Drawing & Project Interpretation

  • Review project drawings, cut lists, bills of material, and specifications before fabrication to confirm scope, dimensions, and required components.
  • Communicate drawing discrepancies, material shortages, or fabrication concerns to the appropriate project or engineering team.
  • Provide fabrication feedback that can improve future designs and simplify field installation.

Quality Control

  • Verify fabricated components and assemblies meet required dimensions and project specifications before release for shipment.
  • Confirm that correct components, connectors, and fasteners have been used.
  • Inspect cut surfaces, connections, hardware, coatings, and overall workmanship.
  • Maintain consistent fabrication standards so assemblies arrive at the jobsite ready for efficient installation.
  • Identify and correct fabrication errors before products leave the shop.

Material & Inventory Coordination

  • Receive, organize, and maintain fabrication materials within the shop.
  • Pull materials according to project bills of material and production requirements.
  • Monitor commonly used components and notify the appropriate team when inventory is running low.
  • Minimize scrap through accurate layout, cutting, and material utilization.
  • Properly identify and organize leftover material for future use.
  • Assist with receiving and inspecting incoming shipments when needed.

Packaging & Shipping Preparation

  • Organize completed assemblies and loose components by project, area, or installation sequence.
  • Label fabricated materials clearly for identification in the field.
  • Prepare complete material packages for shipment or customer pickup.
  • Verify quantities against the project bill of material prior to shipment.
  • Coordinate with warehouse, operations, and project personnel to ensure projects ship accurately and on schedule.
  • Protect finished material from damage during storage and transportation.

Shop Operations & Equipment

  • Safely operate saws, drills, grinders, impact tools, measuring equipment, material handling equipment, and other fabrication tools.
  • Maintain fabrication tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient fabrication area.
  • Follow all company safety policies and required PPE practices.
  • Assist with establishing standard shop procedures, fixtures, jigs, and work methods that improve fabrication speed and consistency.

Team & Project Support

  • Coordinate closely with the ACI Pro Team, sales team, project management, engineering, warehouse, and operations.
  • Help determine efficient fabrication and assembly methods for upcoming projects.
  • Support prototype or first-of-kind assemblies when new applications are developed.
  • Assist with estimating fabrication labor when requested.
  • Track fabrication time and provide feedback regarding actual labor requirements.
  • Help develop repeatable fabrication standards as ACI's business grows.
  • Provide technical and fabrication support to field personnel when questions arise regarding prefabricated assemblies.

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on fabrication experience.
  • Experience accurately measuring, laying out, cutting, drilling, and assembling steel or similar materials.
  • Ability to read and understand fabrication drawings and dimensional plans.
  • Comfortable using tape measures, squares, levels, calipers, and other measurement tools.
  • Experience with saws, drills, impact tools, grinders, and standard fabrication equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple fabrication priorities.
  • Ability to safely lift and handle steel sections and fabricated assemblies.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, quality, and productivity.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in structural steel, pipe support, mechanical, HVAC, industrial, or commercial construction fabrication.
  • Experience fabricating pipe racks, equipment supports, skids, structural frames, or mechanical support systems.
  • Welding experience and/or welding certification.
  • Forklift and material-handling experience.
  • Experience working from CAD-generated fabrication drawings or BIM models.
  • Familiarity with Sikla siFramo or other modular framing/support systems.

  • Operation of forklifts or other material-handling equipment, if qualified.
  • Use of required personal protective equipment.
  • Occasional travel to customer or project sites may be required.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means:

  • Fabrication is completed accurately, on schedule, and in accordance with approved drawings and dimensions.
  • Projects are complete, labeled, and organized for efficient field installation.
  • Material waste and rework are minimized.
  • Shop inventory is organized and fabrication materials are accounted for.
  • Fabrication methods become faster and more repeatable as volume grows.
  • ACI-prefabricated assemblies consistently arrive ready to install and perform as intended.
