Overview

An effective Team Member is a key contributor to the structural steel fabrication team and tasked with producing quality fabricated steel assemblies. This individual demonstrates technical expertise, with attention to detail, and a strong commitment to production, safety and teamwork. This person is reliable, competent, motivated, willing to do all the jobs, and able to improve and develop their skills.

Responsibilities


  • Perform tasks to produce quality fabricated steel assemblies with attention to detail and adherence to standards.

  • Collaborate with team members to maintain efficient workflow and uphold safety protocols.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and functional condition.

  • Follow work directions from supervisory leadership and contribute to timely project completion.

  • Operate within the team to meet production goals and support a positive safety culture.


Task Related Skills


  • Accurately interpret and apply fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and layout instructions.

  • Accurately cut and cope materials as directed by shop drawings.

  • Perform precise fit-up of handrails, ladders and other components, ensuring alignment and dimensional accuracy.

  • Execute high-quality welds using appropriate techniques based on material and project requirements.

  • Conduct visual inspections and measurements to verify compliance with specifications and tolerances.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and functional condition.

Qualifications & Physical Demands

Structural welders must meet several physical demands due to the nature of the work, including strength and stamina, manual dexterity, endurance, flexibility, visual acuity, balance and coordination, and the ability to work in various positions and environments. This role includes indoor fabrication shop and occasional outdoor work, with exposure to extreme conditions.


Environmental Conditions


  • Exposure to high noise levels from cutting, grinding, and welding operations.

  • Presence of dust, fumes, and airborne particles, especially from welding and metal finishing.

  • Variable temperatures due to weather and production activities.

  • Occasional work at elevated heights or in confined spaces during inspections of large assemblies.


Physical Hazards


  • Risk of cuts, burns, and abrasions from sharp edges, hot surfaces, and welding equipment.

  • Potential for impact injuries from moving steel components, overhead cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery.

  • Exposure to welding arcs and UV radiation; proper eye and skin protection required.

  • Manual handling of heavy tools and materials; use proper lifting techniques.


Safety Requirements


  • Must wear appropriate PPE including steel-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and flame-resistant clothing.

  • Must be trained in hazards such as HazCom, LOTO, fall protection, and confined space entry procedures.

  • Expected to participate in regular safety meetings, audits, and emergency drills.

  • Responsible for reporting unsafe conditions and contributing to continuous safety improvement.

  • Must obtain OSHA 10 card for jobsite work.


Compliance & Schedule

Compliance: Must follow OSHA safety standards and AISC Quality and Welding standards. Work Schedule: May include overtime, weekends, and night shifts depending on project deadlines.
