Job summary

Englewood Water District is seeking a Meter Service Technician to repair and replace meters and boxes, troubleshoot meters, and complete service orders. The role requires accurate reading and recording of water meters and effective customer communication.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent, a valid Florida driver’s license, and candidates with 2 years of field experience preferred. On-call, weekend, and night work may be required, with safety and professionalism

Job description

This position is responsible for making repairs to meters and boxes, troubleshooting meters, and completion of service orders. This position also requires accurate reading and recording of all water meters.

Essential Job Functions
  • Determines the need for repair or replacement of damaged or defective meters and boxes.
  • Responsible for checking leaks, reviewing high consumption reports, performing accuracy testing on meters, investigating zero consumption, and meter tampering.
  • Maintains and replaces parts and meter boxes.
  • Clearing dirt, sand, root intrusions, and standing water from meter boxes (using hand tools, siphon pumps, or probing rods).
  • Marking meter locations with marking paint, electronically recording meter locations, and collecting GPS coordinates.
  • Responsible for the completion of service orders to include turning on and shutting off water meters, locking of meters, replacing meter registers, exercising valves, verification, etc. and electronically entering information relating to the service order into the iPad or other device.
  • Ensure accurate reading of water meters installed to include manual reading, the operation of the handheld meter reading devices, and meter reading AMR drive by units.
  • Help educate customers regarding meter reading procedures, excessive use, water restrictions, and water conservation, etc.
  • Responsible for polite and effective communications with customers regarding meter reading procedures, excessive use, utility policies, water conservation guidelines, and leak detection advice to property owners; de-escalates tense field interactions professionally.
  • Responsible for maintaining and presenting a high public image.
  • Responsible for keeping assigned district vehicle maintained to include the cleaning of the inside and outside of vehicle and reporting any maintenance that may be needed.
  • Responsible for following established safety guidelines regarding access to meters, vehicle safety, personal safety, and hazardous conditions, reporting any issues to appropriate staff.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of tools and equipment required to perform assigned job duties.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Must possess customer service skills including the ability to communicate in person and in writing.
  • Must possess mathematics skills.
  • Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skilled in using computers for data entry.
  • Ability to read water meters daily manually, using a hand-held meter reading device or drive by AMR meter reading unit.
  • Ability to check meters for functionality.
  • Ability to process service orders electronically on an iPad or other device.
  • Ability to read and write English legibly.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, other employees, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude during stressful situations.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and show flexibility as needed based on daily demands.
  • Ability to be on call and to work weekends, holidays, and/or nights as needed.
  • Ability to learn the geography of the district and follow routing and street maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
  • Two (2) years of field work experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Additional requirements include balancing, bending, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
Position requires the operation of a District vehicle.

Every District employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
