Job summary

The City of Dade City is seeking an entry-level Utilities Service Worker I to perform daily construction, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater lines, meters, lift stations, and related devices under close supervision.

Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with potential changes for projects and on-call rotations. Overtime may be required and emergencies may be needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training and experience in building maintenance, plumbing, and pipe fitting preferred.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, grounds, buildings, and lift stations.
  • Installs and maintains water meters and meter boxes.
  • Checks meters for leaks and performs minor repairs.
  • Repairs or replaces defective meters.
  • Replaces manhole components and air release valves; cleans and maintains areas.
  • Identifies safety concerns and reports vandalism.
  • Maintains daily paperwork and records.
  • Assist with bypass/dewatering pumps and with collection system investigations.
  • Participates in valve exercise program and supports field operations as directed.

Job description

The role of a Utilities Service Worker I is an entry level position responsible for the daily construction, repair, and maintenance of the city’s water and wastewater lines, water meters, wastewater collection systems, lift stations, valves, hydrants, and other utility distribution system devices.This work is performed under close supervision – the incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions; work is checked frequently and is reviewed through observation, completion of work orders, and review of results achieved.Normally scheduled work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:0 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. but may be subject to change based on projects or services. Employees are subject to emergency on call rotations and overtime may be required.

This is a mission critical position:

Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The City Manager makes the determination of who will be required to work in times of emergency. The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs limited maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, grounds, buildings, and lift stations.
  • Installs water meters and maintains water meter boxes.
  • Checks meters for stem leaks, curb stop leaks, hand valve leaks, broken boxes and lids, and broken water glasses and then performs maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Repairs or replaces defective meters.
  • Repair, replace, and make adjustments to manhole frame/covers, air release valves, and cleanouts.
  • Identifies and reports vandalism and safety concerns.
  • Performs maintenance and minor repair of assigned equipment and tools.
  • Works with other water meter reading/service personnel.
  • Turns water service off for non-payment and turns water on for re-connections or new service.
  • Responsible for accurately maintaining daily paperwork and record keeping.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining bypass and dewatering pumps, hoses, and other apparatuses
  • Assist with collection system troubleshoot investigations, including customer backups, blockages, odor complaints, rodents, or other concerns.
  • Any additional duties assigned by the Utilities Field Supervisor, Utilities Superintendent, and/or the Utilities Director.
  • Participates in the valve exercise program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the standard safety practices, and occupational hazards of tools, materials and equipment used in the building trade duties
  • Ability to plan, layout, and perform assigned work from work orders, equipment maintenance catalog cuts, diagrams, sketches and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of City and its geography, street locations and meter locations.
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and practices of water meter repair, testing, and installation.
  • Ability to operate sewer cart and other equipment as needed in performance of job.
  • Ability to handle customer complaints tactfully and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, required.
  • Technical training and experience inbuilding maintenance, general plumbing, and pipe fitting; highlypreferred.
  • Driving and the operation of trucks and chemical spraying equipment; required.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
  • A valid Florida State Driver’s License; required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works is performed under supervision of the Utility Field Supervisor.

PHYSICAL ABILITY

Tasks require the ability to physically lift, push and carrying heavy objects (45 pounds and over). Reaching, climbing, walking, bending and crawling. Driving and the operation of trucks and chemical spraying equipment is a requirement.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Some tasks are performed in a shop environment, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents. Some tasks are performed in an environment with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, toxic agents. Tasks include working around moving parts, equipment, carts, and materials handling where physical risks are predictable/controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Essential functions are performed inside and outside with exposure to various weather conditions. Regular exposure to radiant energy, electrical energy, grease or oils, solvents, odors, noisy and dusty conditions, heights and uneven surfaces.
