Job summary

City of Bradenton is seeking a Water Distribution technician within Public Works & Utilities to perform journey level work installing, maintaining, repairing, and testing water meters and backflow devices, and evaluate cross connections between potable and non-potable supplies.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair and test water meters and backflow devices.
  • Inspect facilities for illegal cross connections between potable and non-potable water supplies.
  • Document work for records and reporting; complete required compliance reports.
  • Operate trucks and equipment; ensure safety and report defects.
  • Direct traffic and set up barricades before construction activities.
  • Conduct duties via work orders and maintain basic records.

Position

Public Works & Utilities – Water Distribution

Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs journey level work for the installation, maintenance, repair and testing of water meters and backflow prevention devices. Inspects and evaluates existing water system facilities for possible illegal cross connections between the potable and non‑potable water supply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides installation, maintenance, repair and testing of water meters and backflow prevention devices.
  • Inspects and evaluates existing water system facilities for any possible illegal cross connection between the potable and non‑potable water supply.
  • Redirects, removes and reports identified illegal cross connections.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs pressure regulating valves.
  • Documents the work performed for proper record keeping and reporting of daily activities.
  • Initiates reports per compliance standards, codes, rules and regulations according to local and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Operates trucks and construction/maintenance equipment as necessary to complete work projects; checks equipment for proper servicing, operation and safety and reports defects to crew chief; maintains inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of construction and repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
  • Performs duties as assigned through work orders.
  • Keeps basic records; performs computer data entry.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of safe work techniques and practices.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and decisions.
  • Basic water meter design and proper installation, repair and testing.
  • Basic backflow prevention device design and proper installation, repair and testing.
  • Knowledge of illegal cross connection between potable and non‑potable water supply systems.
  • Geographic knowledge of the area and location of water meters and backflow prevention devices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Knowledge of job‑related software as required by Department.
  • Physical abilities: work in close, confined spaces; walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, reach above shoulders, work overhead on ladders and platforms, and use fingers and hands with dexterity.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Environmental Conditions

Work is primarily performed outside in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time. Employees are exposed to loud noises from construction equipment, live sewer systems, debris, hot tar, heavy equipment, hazardous gases, fumes, paint, chemicals and pesticides, confined spaces, heights, uneven surfaces and periods requiring hands in water. Physical effort is required for heavy manual labor in confined spaces and uncomfortable conditions, as well as climbing ladders, bending, reaching and standing for long periods. Health and safety training and personal protective equipment are provided.

Equipment Used

Computer, cell phone, telephone, radio, non‑CDL vehicles, light equipment, pumps, power valve turner, trencher, generators, concrete saw, shovels, sledge hammers, wrenches, pipe cutters, ratchets, saws, and other hand tools. CDL‑class vehicles may be operated with proper licensing.

Education and Experience Required

Must possess a Water Distribution Level 3 License, FWPCOA or TREEO Backflow Repair or Backflow Testing Certifications. A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the City Administrator or designee. Valid Florida driver license required or ability to obtain within 30 days of establishing residency, if applicable.

Commercial Driver License (CDL)

A Commercial Driver License (CDL) is not required for this position.

Pay Grade

Pay Grade: 113

Schedule

Full time. Works a regular weekday daytime shift. Scheduled and unscheduled overtime, including evenings, weekends and holidays, may be required. The position normally requires response to emergency conditions.

Supervision

Supervisor, Crew Chief; Assistant Superintendent; Superintendent; Operations & Maintenance Manager; PWU Associate Director; PWU Director; or designees. No supervision exercised.
